Toshiba Corporation (TSE:6502) and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (NYSE:KKR) are among those expected to bid for Panasonic Corporation (TSE:6752), financial sources with knowledge of the matter said. Panasonic is looking to raise as much as $1 billion by selling shares in the healthcare unit, whose products include blood sugar monitoring equipment, hearing aids and electronic medical record-keeping systems. Panasonic declined to comment on the sale process. About 10 investment funds, including KKR, Bain Capital, LLC, The Carlyle Group LP (NasdaqGS:CG), TPG Capital, LLP and Unison Capital, Inc. are expected to enter bids, the sources said. Representatives of Toshiba and KKR declined to comment.
MphasiS Limited (BSE:526299)’s original founder Jerry Rao and former Chief Executive Officer K Jeyakumar have been approached by several private equity firms to partner in 'management buy-in' deals, said people directly involved with the matter. Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) has had discussions with buyout funds such as TPG Capital, L.P., Advent International Corporation, The Carlyle Group LP (NasdaqGS:CG) and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (NYSE:KKR) in the run-up to their decision to exit MphasiS. Some of these funds have approached Jerry Rao to help them structure an acquisition. Rao and his former Chief Financial Officer Ravi Ramu have been talking to their past senior colleagues to put together a management team to explore a bid, said sources cited earlier in this report. Jerry Rao could not be reached by The Times of India for immediate comments while Ravi Ramu declined to comment.
A lawsuit by auto dealers has put a chill on the potential sale of R. L. Polk & Co. (OTCPK:POLL), people familiar with the matter said. Corporate buyers and a host of private-equity firms, including The Carlyle Group LP (NasdaqGS:CG) and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (NYSE:KKR) are interested in Polk, the people said. Polk has retained bankers to explore alternatives. A representative for Polk said: "We do not anticipate that [the suit] will have an effect on the ongoing process of evaluating our strategic growth alternatives."
