cai international inc (CAP) Key Developments

CAI International Inc. Reports Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 31, 2014; Provides Tax Rate Guidance for the Remainder of the Year 2014

CAI International Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported total revenue of $54.264 million compared to $50.959 million a year ago. Operating income was $24.429 million compared to $27.848 million a year ago. Net income before income taxes and non-controlling interest was $15.638 million compared to $18.339 million a year ago. Net income attributable to company was $14.271 million or $0.63 per diluted share compared to $16.067 million or $0.71 per diluted share a year ago. Total capital expenditures were approximately $73 million, of which approximately $20 million was payment of equipment that have been delivered in 2013. As compared to the first quarter of last year, the decline in net income is primarily be attributed to 4 factors: First, the 2 percentage point drop in own fleet utilization impacted net income by about $1.5 million from a combination of decreased revenue and an increase in storage cost. Second, a very competitive market has resulted in lower average rental rates for new fleet additions, leading to depreciation expense being a higher percentage of revenue in the first quarter of 2014 than it was in the first quarter of last year. Third, gains on sale of used equipment decreased by $800,000 as compared to first quarter of last year. Finally, MG&A expense was $6.7 million in this quarter, which while in line with the run rate guidance the company provided during last call, increased by $500,000 as compared to the first quarter of last year. The company expects its overall tax rate for the remainder of the year to remain at about 9% and Expect that it will slightly decrease in subsequent years.
