Career Education Corporation operates colleges, schools, and universities that provide educational services in career-oriented disciplines worldwide. It operates in seven segments: Colorado Technical University; American InterContinental University; Health Education; Culinary Arts; Design & Technology; International; and Transitional Schools. The company offers doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degrees, as well as diploma and certificate programs through online, on-ground, and hybrid learning program offerings. It also provides academic programs in disciplines, such as business studies, information systems and technologies, criminal justice, computer science and engineering, health sciences, and design technologies in an online, classroom, or laboratory setting; culinary arts programs in disciplines of culinary arts, patisserie, and baking in the commercial kitchens of Le Cordon Bleu; and culinary arts, and hotel and restaurant management online. In addition, the company offers academic programs in disciplines, including fashion and game design, graphic and interior design, film and video production, photography, and visual communications in a classroom, laboratory, or online setting; jobs training in the energy conservation fields primarily for the building and construction industry; and educational sessions. As of December 31, 2012, it served approximately 76,000 students. Career Education Corporation was founded in 1994 and is based in Schaumburg, Illinois.

For the quarter, the company reported total revenue of $340,483,000 compared to $431,364,000 a year ago. Operating loss was $18,101,000 compared to operating income of $47,856,000 a year ago. Pretax loss was $25,730,000 compared to pretax profit of $48,089,000 a year ago. Loss from continuing operations was $14,491,000 or $0.22 per diluted share compared to income from continuing operations of $41,659,000 or $0.62 per diluted share a year ago. Net loss was $15,203,000 or $0.23 per diluted share compared to net income of $52,076,000 or $0.78 per diluted share a year ago.
