Central Garden & Pet Company produces and sells various products for the pet, and lawn and garden supplies markets in the United States. The company operates in two segments, Pet, and Lawn and Garden. The Pet segment supplies products for dogs and cats comprising edible bones, edible and non-edible chews, dog and cat food and treats, toys, pet carriers, grooming supplies, and other accessories; and food, cages and habitats, toys, chews, and related accessories for birds, small animals, and specialty pets. It also offers animal and household health, and insect control products; aquariums, furniture and lighting fixtures, pumps, filters, water conditioners, food and supplements, and information and knowledge resources for fish, reptiles, and other aquarium-based pets; and products for horses and livestock. This segment sells its products to independent pet distributors, retail chains, grocery stores, mass merchants, and bookstores under various brand names, which include Adams, Aqueon, Avoderm, BioSpot, Farnam, Four Paws, Kaytee, Nylabone, Pinnacle, TFH, Zilla, Altosid, Comfort Zone, Coralife, Interpet, Kent Marine, Oceanic Systems, Pet Select, Pre-Strike, Super Pet, and Zodiac. The Lawn and Garden segment provides grass seeds; wild bird feed, bird feeders, bird houses, and other birding accessories; weed, grass, ant and other herbicide, insecticide, and pesticide products; and decorative outdoor lifestyle and lighting products, such as comprising potteries, trellises and other wood products, and holiday lighting products. This segment sells its products to retail chains, independent garden distributors, grocery stores, nurseries, and garden supply retailers under the AMDRO, GKI/Bethlehem Lighting, Ironite, Pennington, Sevin, Grant’s, Lilly Miller, Matthews Four Seasons, New England Pottery, Norcal Pottery, Over-N-Out, Smart Seed, and The Rebels brand names. The Company was founded in 1955 and is based in Walnut Creek, California.

The brand has a bold look for stronger on-shelf presence, offers several improved formulations, and multiple additions to the brand portfolio. Bio Spot Active Care(TM) also offers a full line of proven solutions to care for the common health needs of pets, including supplements and milk replacers. The BioSpot Active Care(TM) brand recommends a 3-Step Program for optimum flea and tick control, which helps retailers educate their consumers and customize a sale based on an individual customer's need. On-animal products offer relief from biting fleas and ticks including a faster drying dog Spot On(R) product. Home products help eradicate fleas, ticks and other insects in the household, while the yard spray works for up to four weeks and controls over 47 outdoor insects.

Central Garden & Pet Company Announces Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended December 28, 2013

Central Garden & Pet Company announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended December 28, 2013. For the quarter, the company reported net sales of $290.5 million compared with $292.5 million in the first quarter of the prior year. The company's operating loss improved to $8.4 million compared to an operating loss of $13.1 million in the first quarter of 2013, reflecting improved gross margins and lower SG&A expense as a percent of sales. The net loss attributable to the company was $12.7 million or $0.26 per fully diluted share compared to a net loss attributable to the company of $15.3 million or $0.32 per fully diluted share in the year-ago period. Loss before income taxes and non controlling interest was $20.73 million compared to $24.32 million reported a year ago. Cash flow from operations improved $58 million from a year ago. The improvement in cash flow from operations was largely driven by reduced spending on inventory during the quarter. Capital expenditure for the quarter was $5.4 million versus $8 million in the first quarter of 2013.
