Central Garden & Pet Company produces and sells various products for the pet, and lawn and garden supplies markets in the United States. The company operates in two segments, Pet, and Lawn and Garden. The Pet segment supplies products for dogs and cats comprising edible bones, edible and non-edible chews, dog and cat food and treats, toys, pet carriers, grooming supplies, and other accessories; and food, cages and habitats, toys, chews, and related accessories for birds, small animals, and specialty pets. It also offers animal and household health, and insect control products; aquariums, furniture and lighting fixtures, pumps, filters, water conditioners, food and supplements, and information and knowledge resources for fish, reptiles, and other aquarium-based pets; and products for horses and livestock. This segment sells its products to independent pet distributors, retail chains, grocery stores, mass merchants, and bookstores under various brand names, which include Adams, Aqueon, Avoderm, BioSpot, Farnam, Four Paws, Kaytee, Nylabone, Pinnacle, TFH, Zilla, Altosid, Comfort Zone, Coralife, Interpet, Kent Marine, Oceanic Systems, Pet Select, Pre-Strike, Super Pet, and Zodiac. The Lawn and Garden segment provides grass seeds; wild bird feed, bird feeders, bird houses, and other birding accessories; weed, grass, ant and other herbicide, insecticide, and pesticide products; and decorative outdoor lifestyle and lighting products, such as comprising potteries, trellises and other wood products, and holiday lighting products. This segment sells its products to retail chains, independent garden distributors, grocery stores, nurseries, and garden supply retailers under the AMDRO, GKI/Bethlehem Lighting, Ironite, Pennington, Sevin, Grant’s, Lilly Miller, Matthews Four Seasons, New England Pottery, Norcal Pottery, Over-N-Out, Smart Seed, and The Rebels brand names. The Company was founded in 1955 and is based in Walnut Creek, California.

Central Garden & Pet Company Reports Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the Second Quarter and Six Months Ended March 29, 2014

Central Garden & Pet Company reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended March 29, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported net sales of $501.6 million, a 1% increase over the comparable fiscal 2013 period. Operating income was $44.8 million, compared to operating income of $46.7 million in the second quarter of 2013. Net income was $20.9 million, or $0.43 per fully diluted share, compared with net income of $22.2 million or $0.46 per fully diluted share in the prior year. Income before income taxes and non-controlling interest was $34.488 million against $35.788 million a year ago. Cash flow used by operations was $90 million, an improvement of $44 million compared to the second quarter of 2013. This improvement is primarily attributable to lower inventory balances resulting from focused efforts to reduce investment in working capital over time. CapEx for the quarter was $4.6 million versus $8.1 million last year. For the six months ending March 29, 2014, the company reported net sales of $792.1 million, a slight increase from $790.7 million in the comparable 2013 period. Operating income increased to $36.4 million compared to $33.7 million in the prior year. Net income was $8.2 million, an increase of $1.3 million compared to the comparable 2013 period. Earnings per fully diluted share were $0.17 compared to $0.14 per fully diluted share in the year ago period. Income before income taxes and non-controlling interest was $13.761 million against $11.463 million a year ago. The company reduced its net debt by $50 million even after taking into account funds used for recent acquisition.
