The Board of Directors of Cummins Inc. declared a quarterly common stock cash dividend of 50 cents per share, payable on June 3, 2013 to shareholders of record on May 24, 2013.
Cummins Inc. announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the period, the company reported net sales of $3,922 million, operating income of $414 million, income before income taxes of $431 million, net income of $312 million and net income attributable to company of $282 million or $1.49 per diluted share against net sales of $4,472 million, operating income of $648 million, income before income taxes of $650 million, net income of $475 million and net income attributable to company of $455 million or $2.38 per diluted share a year ago period. Net cash provided by operating activities was $428 million against $21 million a year ago period. Capital expenditures were $114 million against $126 million a year ago period. EBIT was $437 million against $658 million a year ago period. The tax rate for the three month period ended March 31, 2013, was 27.6%. Revenues in North America declined by 15% and international revenues declined by 10% as the Company experienced weaker demand in most major geographies and end markets. The company's effective tax rate for the year is expected to approximate 29.5%, excluding any one-time items that may arise. The tax rate is generally less than the 35% U.S. statutory income tax rate primarily due to lower tax rates on foreign income and research tax credits. The increase in the 2013 effective tax rate compared to 2012 is due primarily to an unfavorable change in the pre-tax mix of income taxed in higher rate jurisdictions, partially offset by $11 million of net discrete tax benefits. Based on the current forecast, the Company expects full year revenues to be flat to down 5% and EBIT to be in the range of 13 to 14% of sales.
Cummins Inc. broke ground for a new plant and office building for the company's Cummins Marktheidenfeld (CMHF) business at a ceremony attended by Cummins Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tom Linebarger and Marktheidenfeld Mayor Helga Schmidt-Neder. The new facility will house a state-of-the art plant where Cummins Emission Solutions, a subsidiary of Cummins Inc., will design and manufacture selective catalytic reduction (SCR) dosing systems, a critical part of the emissions controls for diesel engines. The new facility, on land near the current site, will provide room for the business to grow. Construction is expected to begin later this summer with completion in early 2014.
