Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company, engages in the acquisition, development, and commercialization of prescription pharmaceutical drugs for the hospital and adjacent specialty markets. The company offers CARDENE I.V., a premixed injection for the short-term treatment of hypertension; CUROSURF, a natural lung surfactant for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants; and ZYFLO, a leukotriene synthesis inhibitor for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It also provides BETHKIS, an inhaled tobramycin-based product for the management of cystic fibrosis patients with pseudomonas aeruginosa; and hydrocodone polistirex and chlorpheniramine polistirex extended release suspension, an antitussive/antihistamine combination product. In addition, the company develops RETAVASE, a recombinant plasminogen activator for use in the management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in adults, the enhancement of ventricular function following AMI, the reduction of incidence of congestive heart failure, and the reduction of mortality associated with AMI; and LIXAR, an orally-active vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist for the treatment of hyponatremia. Its customers consist of drug wholesalers, retail drug stores, mass merchandisers, and grocery store pharmacies in the United States. The company was formerly known as Critical Therapeutics, Inc. and changed its name to Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. in October 2008. Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. is headquartered in Cary, North Carolina. Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. is a subsidiary of Chiesi Farmaceutici S.p.A.

Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. announced it had entered into a license and distribution agreement with Digestive Care, Inc. pursuant to which the company acquired exclusive U.S. rights to market PERTZYE®, pancreatic enzyme product for the treatment of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency due to cystic fibrosis. The PERTZYE formulation was previously marketed by DCI for more than a decade under the trade name PANCRECARB® MS-16. The license agreement includes the right of first refusal to negotiate a license to any alternative, substitute, successor or improvement to PERTZYE that DCI may develop. The license agreement contains a non-competition covenant under which the Company may not manufacture, promote, market, sell or distribute in the United States any pancreatic enzyme product that is indicated for the treatment of patients with CF for the duration of the license agreement. The license agreement will remain in force for an initial term of ten years from the effective date, or May 9, 2023.
