This segment also provides new parts and service, as well as remanufactured parts and engines. The Components segment supplies after treatment systems, turbochargers, filtration products, and fuel systems for commercial diesel applications. It offers filtration systems for on-and off-highway heavy-duty and mid-range equipment, as well as supplies filtration products for industrial and passenger car applications. This segment serves engine and distribution segments, truck manufacturers, and other original equipment manufacturers. The Power Generation segment designs and manufactures components that make up power generation systems, including engines, controls, alternators, transfer switches, and switchgear, as well as power generation systems, components, and services. The Distribution segment provides maintenance contracts, engineering services, and integrated products. The company sells its products to original equipment manufacturers, distributors, and other customers worldwide. Cummins Inc. was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Columbus, Indiana.

Allison Transmission Holdings Inc. Announces a New Integrated Stop-Start Technology in Conjunction with Cummins Inc

Allison Transmission Holdings Inc. announced new integrated stop-start technology in conjunction with Project ETHOS, an ultra-low carbon powertrain program created by Cummins Inc. to demonstrate the potential of alternative fuels for carbon dioxide (CO2) reductions in medium-duty commercial vehicles. In partnership with the California Energy Commission, Cummins developed an engine that uses E85 (a high-octane blend of ethanol and gasoline) as a fuel to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions significantly. The Cummins ETHOS 2.8L engine is coupled with an Allison 2000 Series(TM) fully automatic transmission which utilizes integrated stop-start for further emissions reduction, as well as increased fuel economy. Integrated stop-start shuts the engine down when the operator presses the brake pedal and the vehicle comes to a complete stop. The transmission remains in drive during this time and locks the output to help prevent vehicle rollback by using an electric pump. As the driver's foot is lifted from the brake, the system automatically starts the engine to allow acceleration. Allison worked closely with Cummins to integrate the 2550 transmission model for smooth and efficient stop-start operation. The transmission is equipped with specific hydraulic circulation features to ensure smooth operation during stop-start driving. Additionally, all Allison Automatics provide Continuous Power Technology(TM) with seamless full-power shifts to put engine power to the drive wheels in the most efficient way. The result is faster acceleration and higher average road speed for quicker route times and greater productivity. Testing and validation were conducted using test cells and a prototype delivery step van provided by Freightliner Custom Chassis. Valvoline provided NextGen engine oils specifically designed for lower CO2 emissions.

Cummins Appoints Rich Freeland as New President and COO

Cummins announced the appointment of Rich Freeland as its new president and chief operating officer, to boost company's performance. In this new role, Freeland will report directly to Tom Linebarger, the chairman and CEO. Since 2010 he is functioning as engine business president for Cummins.

Cummins Inc. Announces Development of Cummins ETHOS 2.8L Engine

Cummins Inc. announced the development of an engine and powertrain that reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by as much as 80% compared with a baseline gasoline-powered medium-duty truck. The work was jointly funded by Cummins in partnership with the California Energy Commission (CEC). The Cummins ETHOS 2.8L is designed specifically to use E-85, a clean-burning blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. To take full advantage of the favorable combustion attributes and potential of E-85, the engine operates at diesel-like cylinder pressures and incorporates advanced spark-ignition technology. It delivers the power (up to 250 hp) and peak torque (up to 450 lb-ft) of gasoline and diesel engines nearly twice its 2.8-liter displacement. The Cummins ETHOS 2.8L engine also incorporates an integrated stop-start system, which further reduces fuel consumption and emissions. In stop-start mode, the engine shuts down after the vehicle comes to a complete stop and the brake pedal remains depressed. As the driver's foot is lifted from the brake, the system automatically starts the engine to seamlessly allow acceleration from the stop. Cummins-integrated specific system controls, along with a robust starter, smart alternator and sensors, are all designed to handle the additional stop-start duty cycle and maintain reliable operation over the life of the engine. Cummins also worked closely with Allison Transmission(R) to integrate the 2000 Series transmission for smooth and efficient stop-start operation. The transmission is equipped with hydraulic circulation features to ensure smooth operation and quick vehicle launch during stop-start driving. Additional partners in the project included Valvoline,(R) which provided NextGen(R) engine oils specifically designed for lower CO2 emissions, and Freightliner Custom Chassis, which provided a prototype MT45 Class 5 step-van vehicle. Using corn-derived E-85, the high thermal efficiency and power-to-weight ratio of this engine results in 50% to 58% lower well-to-wheels CO2 emissions compared with the gasoline engine baseline.
