The company owns and operates nine television networks in the United States, such as discovery channel, TLC, animal planet, investigation discovery, science channel, military channel, destination America, velocity, and discovery fit and health. It also owns interests in the oprah winfrey network, the hub network, 3net television networks, and pan-regional television networks; and free-to-air television networks, including DMAX, fatafeat, quest, real time, giallo, frisbee, focus, and K2. In addition, the company provides brand-aligned Websites, on-line streaming, mobile devices, video on demand (VOD), and broadband channels. Further, it offers curriculum-based product and services through subscriptions for K-12 schools to access online curriculum-based VOD tools, professional development services, digital textbooks, and student assessments, as well as publishes hardcopy curriculum-based content. As of December 31, 2013, it operated approximately 240 distribution feeds in 40 languages internationally. The company is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Northern & Shell Receives Bids For Channel 5 Broadcasting

Northern & Shell Plc has now received several bids for Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited. British Sky Broadcasting Group plc (LSE:BSY) and Discovery Communications, Inc. (NasdaqGS:DISC.A) had made a joint offer for Channel 5 Broadcasting, while Viacom, Inc. (NasdaqGS:VIAB) has also taken part in the sale process, reported Irish Independent citing people familiar with the talks. However, Discovery Communications has dropped out of the bidding, reported Alliance News citing a person with knowledge of the matter. The report by Alliance News said that British Sky Broadcasting and Discovery Communications submitted an offer of approximately £350 million in the second round of bidding, far below the asking price. The reports also added that several other US media companies showed interest early on in the auction but have since exited the process. Mimi Turner, spokeswoman for Northern & Shell, said that Richard Desmond's company will evaluate the bids with advisers in the coming days.

Discovery Communications Names New Vice President of Development for ID

Discovery Communications, Inc. has promoted Winona Meringolo to vice president, development for Investigation Discovery, or ID, the company's television network. In this new position, Meringolo will lead ID development with Jane Latman, SVP Development, ID and General Manager, Discovery Fit & Health, and continue to work closely with Kevin Bennett, General Manager, ID and American Heroes Channel (AHC) on the development slate for the newly named American Heroes Channel. Previously, Meringolo was senior director of development for ID and AHC.
