Dialog Semiconductor plc Releases iW1770 PrimAccurate Primary-Side Controller

Dialog Semiconductor plc has announced the release of its new iW1770 PrimAccurate primary-side controller that reportedly offers a 60W peak power mode from a 40W supply. Conventional power supply designs must be sized to match the peak (maximum) power requirements of the system, which may be significantly higher than the normal system operating power. Dialog's patent-pending peak power mode technology used in the iW1770 provides peak power higher than the maximum continuous output power for a pre-determined period of time, without the need to oversize the power supply transformer and output capacitors. This enables designers to produce higher power adapters that are the same size and cost as power supplies with a nominal rating of 40W. Instead of designing to match the peak power requirements of the system, the iW1770 lets designers create smaller, thinner and lighter-weight power supplies. With an average output power range of 15W to 40W and the ability to handle peaks up to 60W, the iW1770 also offers less than 50mW no-load standby power consumption, fast dynamic load response and high efficiency. This allows power adapters to meet stringent global energy standards including the final 2014 US DoE(1) and European CoC version 5, tier 2(2) regulations. The iW1770 includes a user-configurable, five-level cable drop compensation option to eliminate the ordering and inventory challenges of stocking multiple product versions for various output voltage needs. It comes in a standard, low-cost, 8-lead SOIC package and provides full protection from fault conditions, including output short-circuit, output over-voltage, output over-current and over-temperature protection.

Dialog Semiconductor plc Launches iW671 Synchronous Rectifier

Dialog Semiconductor plc launched its iW671 synchronous rectifier designed to enable small, higher power adapters for mobile devices. The iW671 replaces the secondary-side Schottky diode used in conventional power supplies with a more efficient MOSFET and works with company's iW1786 or iW1787 primary-side controllers to deliver efficiency greater than 88%. This enables the higher power density needed for more powerful, small form-factor adapters without exceeding thermal limits. Conventional power supplies use Schottky diodes to rectify the output voltage (change the AC voltage to a DC voltage). When replacing the Schottky diode with a synchronous rectifier, the voltage dropped across the switching MOSFET is less than the forward voltage of the Schottky diode, thereby reducing power loss. However, conventional synchronous rectifiers still require a Schottky diode to be used in parallel as they need to turn off when approaching the zero crossing to eliminate the risk of shoot-through, which can overheat and potentially destroy the power supply. The iW671 uses company's proprietary digital control technology to eliminate the need for the parallel Schottky diode. Synchronous rectification also leads to an efficiency improvement of approximately 4% at 5V, resulting in the high >88% full-load efficiency for higher power operation in a small form-factor without overheating the power supply. The iW671 is designed to work for 15W or 50W output power, ultra-low no-load standby power consumption of <15mW (iW1786) and <30mW (iW1787) and high efficiency, enabling chargers and adapters to meet stringent global energy standards including the final 2014 U.S. DOE (1) and European CoC version 5, tier 2 (2) regulations. Power supplies for electronic products continue to consume power when plugged in but not in use. To achieve low standby power, these power supplies typically enter a low standby operating mode. However, when a load is applied, they need to wake up quickly to keep the output voltage from dropping too low. Dynamic load response (DLR) is determined by the speed at which the system wakes up and responds to changes in the power load. Typical adapter and charger design approaches achieve low standby power and high efficiency at the expense of slow wake up (i.e. slow DLR performance). The iW671 enables ultra-fast DLR for quicker recovery from low-power standby mode by integrating an adaptive voltage position monitor that detects the flyback converter output voltage undershoot. Key features: iW1786+iW671: up to 15W output power, <15mW no-load standby power consumption. iW1787+iW671: up to 50W output power, <30mW no-load standby power consumption. Eliminates parallel Schottky diode. Higher efficiency >88% (full load). Fast dynamic load response. Complies with US DOE (1) and EU CoC V5, Tier 2 (2) requirements for external power supply efficiency.

Dialog Semiconductor plc Announces Availability of Two New Audio DSP CODECs - DA7322 and DA7323

Dialog Semiconductor plc announced the availability of two new audio DSP CODECs - DA7322 and DA7323 - targeting applications with up to four analogue or digital microphones respectively. Featuring the high levels of audio digital signal processor (DSP) functionality with a minimum power consumption requirement, these products are specifically developed for voice-centric applications found in the latest generation of tablets, wearables, webcam accessories and in-vehicle entertainment. The new audio CODECs incorporate an integrated 24-bit DSP with an advanced voice engine package that provides an improvement of over 35dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) through the use of multi-channel beamforming, noise suppression and acoustic echo cancellation features. The result is a significant enhancement in speech performance with greatly improved sound quality for VoIP and voice recognition applications, which is particularly important for end users in a noisy environment. Targeting wearables, a low power voice trigger is available on the DA7322 and DA7323 where over a dozen keywords can be supported with over 95% accuracy without false triggering. This capability is demonstrated by the TrulyHandsfree always-on voice activation and recognition software provided by Sensory, which includes trigger to search, user-defined triggers, speaker verification and identification and multiple language support. Beamforming technology built into the DA7322 and DA7323 voice engine package has been designed to offer maximum flexibility in terms of microphone placements in order to support both endfire and multi-MIC configurations. The beamforming algorithm also has the ability to suppress a variety of stationary and non-stationary noise sources. The embedded DSP engine includes a suite of audio enhancement SmartEffects ranging from multi-band equalization to stereo widening. It also contains a psychoacoustic bass boost that can be enabled to improve perceived low frequency response for playback on low cost speakers, while dynamic range control and volume levelling offers more perceived loudness and consistent audio levels. The advanced accessory detection integrated on the CODECs supports 3- or 4-pole jack detection. The device can, therefore, automatically detect the type of headset being used, without the need for any external adapters. The DA7322 can support four analogue microphones. The DA7323, by contrast, offers support for three analogue or two pairs of stereo digital microphones. The Dialog DA7322 and DA7323 each come in a 66 bump WL-CSP package. These devices are currently available.
