Vodafone Germany Announces Next-Generation Network Access Agreement with Deutsche Telekom

Vodafone Germany (Vodafone) announced a next-generation network access agreement with Deutsche Telekom (DT) which will allow Vodafone to offer high-speed fixed-line broadband and internet protocol-based TV (IPTV) services across Germany. Vodafone will initially use DT's VDSL network under a bespoke 'Layer 3' (IP-based) bitstream agreement. This will allow Vodafone to offer its customers connection speeds of up to 50 Mbps (rising to 100 Mbps once DT has deployed vectoring technology) as well as Vodafone's own on-demand and broadcast IPTV services. The two companies have also agreed that a new, more advanced 'Layer 2' (ethernet-based) bitstream product will be made available by DT to Vodafone from 2016, which will allow an even greater level of differentiation and control over the design and delivery of the services that Vodafone offers to consumers and enterprise customers.

Deutsche Telekom AG Reports Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 31, 2013

Deutsche Telekom AG reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the quarter, the company's net revenue was EUR 13,785 million compared to EUR 14,432 million a year ago. Operations were positively impacted by growing demand for complete packages with mobile data and/or TV rate plans and attractive handsets, in particular smartphones. Negative impacts on operations included declining revenues from voice telephony, in some cases substantial price changes imposed by regulatory authorities, and intense competitive pressure. Profit from operations was EUR 1,692 million compared to EUR 1,663 million a year ago. EBITDA was EUR 4,079 million compared to EUR 4,397 million a year ago. EBITDA adjusted for special factors was EUR 4,288 million compared to EUR 4,482 million a year ago. Positive impact: the focus on high-value revenue in connection with TV services and mobile data revenues. Negative effects included fixed-network lines lost to competitors, price changes imposed by regulatory authorities, special levies, and national austerity programs. The negative effects were partially offset by comprehensive cost management. Net profit attributable to owners of the parent was EUR 564 million compared to EUR 545 million a year ago. EUR 0.3 billion lower depreciation, amortization and impairment losses had a positive impact. The carrying amounts of property, plant and equipment, and intangible assets in the United States operating segment were reduced as a result of an impairment loss recognized in the prior year. Net profit adjusted for special factors was EUR 767 million compared to EUR 586 million a year ago. Net debt was EUR 37,119 million against EUR 38,627 million a year ago. This increase is primarily attributable to the acquisition of spectrum in the Netherlands EUR 0.9 billion and effects in connection with the AT&T transaction EUR 0.1 billion.
