Emera Incorporated, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity to various customers. The company is also involved in gas transmission and utility services businesses; and the provision of energy marketing, trading, and other energy-related management services. It serves residential customers comprising individual homes, apartments, and condominiums; and commercial customers, such as retail operations, offices, commercial complexes, universities, and hospitals, as well as industrial customers, which include manufacturing facilities and other large volume operations. The company serves approximately 501,000 customers in Nova Scotia; 119,000 customers in eastern Maine; 36,000 customers in northern Maine; and 125,000 customers in the island of Barbados. Emera Incorporated has approximately 5,000 kilometers of transmission facilities and 27,000 kilometers of distribution facilities in Nova Scotia; 1,000 kilometers of transmission facilities and 11,500 kilometers of distribution facilities in eastern Maine; and 600 kilometers of transmission facilities and 3,200 kilometers of distribution facilities in northern Maine. In addition, it transports re-gasified liquefied natural gas to consumers in the northeastern United States through its 145-kilometre pipeline in New Brunswick. Emera Incorporated was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Halifax, Canada.

Southern ITS International Enters into Partnership Agreement with Emap

Southern ITS International Inc. entered into a partnership agreement with Emap Inc. to commercialize their new innovative tracking and monitoring GPS tracking ankle bracelets for house arrest, parole, and other types of offenders that require monitoring. The innovative approach of this new product and services fixes the issues that the industry is facing, which is the large amount of false alarms. Reducing the number of false alarms by 99% makes the data available to correctional officers accurate and relevant for them to do their jobs. The partnership agreement is for SITS to promote sales, collect the fees, operate and manage the monitoring center operations. Emap Inc. will provide the ankle bracelet technology and expertise for GPS tracking.

Emera Inc. Reports Consolidated Earnings Results for the Fourth Quarter and Year Ended December 31, 2013; Reports Impairment Charge for the Fourth Quarter Ended December 31, 2013

Emera Inc. reported consolidated earnings results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2013. Operating revenues increased 8.3% to CAD 2.2 billion in 2013 compared to CAD 2.1 billion in 2012. Net income adjusted for after-tax mark-to-market adjustments increased 12.5% to CAD 259.4 million in 2013 from CAD 230.5 million in 2012. Adjusted net income excludes after-tax mark-to-market losses of CAD 41.9 million against adjusted of CAD 9.7 million last year. Reported net income, including mark-to-market losses was CAD 217.5 million or CAD 1.64 per share against CAD 220.8 million or CAD 1.77 per share last year. Adjusted earnings per share increased 6.0% to CAD 1.96 in 2013 against CAD 1.85 last year. Cash flows from operations increased 41.9% to CAD 564.2 million in 2013 against CAD 397.6 million last year. For the quarter, adjusted earnings per share were CAD 0.47 against CAD 0.46 last year. Reported earnings per share were CAD 0.16 against CAD 0.34 last year. Adjusted earnings were CAD 63 million against CAD 58.6 million last year. Reported earnings were CAD 21 million against CAD 42.7 million last year. In the fourth quarter of 2013, an after-tax investment impairment charge of CAD 7.6 million or CAD 0.06 per common share was recorded to write down the company's investment in Atlantic Hydrogen Inc. The company determined an impairment charge was appropriate as Atlantic Hydrogen Inc.'s path to commercialization is less certain.
