Enel SpA, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the production, distribution, and sale of electricity and gas primarily in Europe, Latin America, and North America. The company supplies electricity to free and regulated market customers; and gas to free market customers. It operates various hydroelectric, thermoelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wind, photovoltaic, biomass, and co-generation power plants with an installed capacity of approximately 97,000 mega watts; and has interests in the Isarene and SE Illizi fields in Algeria, and the Longanesi field in Italy, as well as gas exploration deposits in Russia. The company has approximately 917 million barrels of oil equivalent of proven reserves; and 1,490 million barrels of oil equivalent of proven and probable reserves. Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) is seeking to sell its majority stake in Slovenské Elektrárne A.S. to Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, according to the web site reports citing La Stamapa and Milano Finanza. Rosatom is in talks with the Slovak government on building a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice. Also The web site quoted a Rosatom spokesman as saying the company did not get any offer from Enel. But the web site's unnamed source says the two companies are in talks on the potential sale.
Enel SpA reported consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the quarter, the company reported total revenues of EUR 20,885 million compared to EUR 21,193 million a year ago. Operating income was EUR 2,554 million compared to EUR 2,859 million a year ago. Income before taxes was EUR 1,909 million compared to EUR 2,250 million a year ago. Income from continuing operations was EUR 1,173 million compared to EUR 1,475 million a year ago. Net income attributable to shareholders of the parent company was EUR 852 million or EUR 0.09 per basic and diluted share compared to EUR 1,154 million or EUR 0.12 per basic and diluted share a year ago. Cash used in operating activities was EUR 925 million compared to cash generated from operating activities of EUR 67 million a year ago. EBITDA was EUR 4,077 million compared to EUR 4,257 million a year ago. EBIT was EUR 2,554 million compared to EUR 2,859 million a year ago. The decline in revenue is largely due to the fall in revenues from the sale of electricity to end users, only partially offset by an increase in revenues from the transport and generation of electricity. Capital expenditure was EUR 1,045 million, a decline of 20.5% compared with the corresponding period in 2012. Net debt increased by about EUR 300 million to EUR 43.3 billion.
