Ericsson and IBM Collaborate on 5G Antenna Designs

Ericsson and IBM announced a collaboration to jointly research phased-array antenna designs for 5G, allowing networks to provide customers with data speeds orders of magnitude faster than what is available currently. Ericsson and IBM will research phased-array antenna techniques to develop prototype systems that will serve more mobile users, enable a multitude of new services on the same frequency, as well as offer data speeds that are orders of magnitude faster than present - competitive to existing cable and wired internet access speeds. The phased-array design allows for more directional antennas that are electrically-steerable and will have significant weight and flexibility advantages over existing mechanical antennas.

Ericsson and Econet Wireless Zimbabwe in Five-Year Deal to Enhance Connectivity

Ericsson has announced that it has been selected as the sole supplier by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, for the company's Core network upgrade program. The deal will see the companies working together to simplify and upgrade the existing 2G/3G/4G/LTE networks, future proofing it for the rapid mobile expansion in the country. Building on the companies' existing long-term partnership, the new scope will rationalize and upgrade the Core network as well as introduce the latest Ericsson network architecture. The agreement includes a complete multi-access Evolved Packet Core with Evolved Packet Gateway on SSR 8020, SGSN-MME and Service-Aware Policy Controller as well as Mobile Switching Center and Media Gateway. It also includes close integration between policy and charging functions, which will enable Econet to reduce time-to-market for new offerings and increased personalization capabilities. In the Harare area, which currently carries more than half of all traffic on the network, the project will also upgrade the radio access network (RAN) to include Ericsson's multi-standard RBS 6000 family of base stations for macro and small cell networks.

Ericsson to Trim Labor Force to Cut Overhead

Ericsson announced that it plans to trim costs by $1.2 billion by cutting its workforce and reducing overhead in an effort to gain market share over competitors like Finland's Nokia and China's Huawei Technology.
