Freescale Semiconductor Unveils MC33771 Battery Cell Controller

Freescale Semiconductor has unveiled MC33771, an integrated 14-cell lithium-ion battery cell controller for industrial and automotive applications. With fourteen cell balancing transistors, a current sensor with +/-0.5% accuracy from milliamps to kiloamps, and 2 Mbps communication transceiver interface integrated into a single 64-pin QFP package, Freescale's MC33771 battery cell controller and companion MC33664 isolated communications interface deliver robust, reliable performance for 48 V battery systems, enabling economical scalability beyond 1000 volts. The solution's built-in diagnostics help protect automotive and industrial battery packs against critical fault conditions, and its transformer coupled isolated high speed transceiver eliminates the need for expensive isolated CAN busses to meet ASIL-C requirements. Together, these features make the solution ideal for a broad range of automotive and industrial applications including 48 V battery packs, hybrid and electric cars, E-bikes and energy storage systems. As automotive and industrial batteries are placed under increasing strain by new, mission-critical applications, challenges such as overcharge, overheating and internal short circuit or overload must be controlled in order to help ensure safe operating conditions.

Airvana Selects Freescale's QorIQ QonvergeB4860 and BSC9131 Baseband SoCs

Freescale Semiconductor announced that Airvana has selected the combination of Freescale's QorIQ QonvergeB4860 and BSC9131 baseband SoCs to power its OneCell system. OneCell is the multi-operator small cell solution. OneCell's single cell architecture eliminates handovers and inter-cell interference issues, which improves user experience and simplifies deployment compared to traditional standalone small cells. Based on cloud RAN principles, the OneCell solution utilizes a Baseband Controller and multiple Radio Points to form a single super-cell for consistently high quality LTE service within buildings - including offices, shopping centers and airports. The OneCell system is deployed over standard enterprise Ethernet Local Area Networks and supports plug-and-play setup, thereby dramatically reducing the cost of cabling, network equipment and installation services. Freescale's powerful QorIQ Qonverge B4860 and BSC9131 processors, combined with its operator-proven VortiQa layer 1 software, provide not only the open programmability needed to develop the innovative OneCell solution, but also the flexibility and processing headroom to provision for LTE-Advanced and other features through field software upgrades. QorIQ Qonverge BSC9131 baseband processors are deployed in OneCell access points. The BSC9131 is a highly integrated SoC targeting small cell base stations, enterprise VoIP, smart grid control, and industrial applications. The high-performance device handles a broad range of DSP functions with complementary acceleration and multicore processing. The QorIQ Qonverge B4860 SoC is used in Airvana's controller and combines fully programmable Power Architecture CPU cores, StarCore DSP cores, and a powerful baseband acceleration platform to provide cost-effective, best-in-class performance and connectivity. The device is ideally suited to meet the demands of wireless operators for high capacities and high throughputs in LTE, LTE-Advanced and WCDMA base stations.

Freescale Semiconductor Introduces New VortiQa L1 Baseband Software

Freescale Semiconductor introduced new VortiQa L1 baseband software for TDD-LTE on the QorIQ Qonverge BSC913x family of base station system-on-chip, or SoC, solutions, enabling OEMs and ODMs to deliver small cell solutions to the TDD-LTE market. The new Freescale VortiQa software is designed to seamlessly extend to the Freescale QorIQ Qonverge B3421 metrocell platform, which is the most highly integrated metrocell base station SoC in the industry, for enhanced coverage in user-dense environments and throughout large enterprises. It has the flexibility to support multiple bandwidths, including 5, 10, 15 and 20 MHz, and can support up to 256 users. Available now, the TDD-LTE VortiQa L1 software is 3GPP release 9 compliant and has integrated cell search software. In conjunction with the fully featured LTE L1 software, Freescale has developed a rich ecosystem of partners that produces BOM-optimized hardware designs and fully integrated and tested L2, L3 and management software, which enables rapid deployment in commercial networks.
