GAIL (India) Limited operates as a natural gas company in India and internationally. It engages in the exploration, production, processing, transmission, distribution, and marketing of natural gas. Further, it supplies piped natural gas to households and commercial users, and compressed natural gas to the transport sector. The company, formerly known as Gas Authority of India Ltd, was founded in 1984 and is based in New Delhi, India.

GAIL (India) Limited announced that Shri Sudhir Bhargava, ex-Special Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India is ceased to be Part-time Director (Government Nominee) of the company with effect from May 8, 2013.
GMR Infrastructure Limited (BSE:532754), GVK Power & Infrastructure Limited (BSE:532708) and Lanco Infratech Limited (BSE:532778) have shown interest to acquire stake in re-gasified liquefied natural gas project owned by Andhra Pradesh Gas Distribution Corporation Limited. Andhra Pradesh Gas Distribution is equally owned by AP Gas Infrastructure Corporation (APGIC) and GAIL (India) Limited (BSE:532155). “APGIC and GAIL Gas together hold 50% in the SPV and the British firm GDF Suez LNG holds 26%, while the balance 24% will be sold to private investors with a cap of 7-8% each," a senior bureaucrat from the energy department told Economic Times. "Apart from the independent power producers, few other gas consuming industrial entities have also shown interest to pick up minority stakes", said the bureaucrat.
GAIL (India) Limited is planning to sell part of it s 4.6% stake in China Gas Holdings Limited. The GAIL’s Board has accorded approval to partially divest equity stake in China Gas. GAIL plans to retain a small strategic interest in China Gas Holdings that will help it retain its Board position in China Gas.
