Carbunion Launches Legal Actions Against Endesa, Gas Natural and Iberdrola

Spanish mining business association Carbunion has launched legal actions before the national court Audiencia Nacional against Endesa, Gas Natural and Iberdrola which suspended the acquisition of coal from the state reserve. The decision of the thermal power plant operators to suspend coal acquisition caused a loss of EUR 52 million for the members of Carbunion since the beginning of the year. At the same time, the Spanish mining companies are negotiating a plan for the sector in the 2013-2018 period, after the state support for the purchase of coal was frozen in 2012. In March, Endesa, Iberdrola and Gas Natural Fenosa appealed the government's coal purchase obligation for thermal power plants before Audiencia Nacional. With the obligation, the government responded to the decision of local power utilities to suspend acquiring coal until the law regulating the incentives for the production of electricity by burning coal produced in Spain is cancelled.
