The company operates in three segments: U.S. Retail, International, and Convenience Stores and Foodservice. Its products include ready-to-eat cereals; convenient meals, including meal kits, ethnic meals, pizza, frozen breakfast, and frozen entrees; snacks comprising grain, fruit, and savory snacks, as well as nutrition bars and frozen hot snacks; refrigerated yogurt products; ice creams; baking mixes and ingredients; refrigerated and frozen dough products; and frozen and shelf-stable vegetable products. In addition, the company’s products comprise organic products, such as granola bars, cereals, and soups. It sells its products directly, as well as through broker and distribution arrangements to grocery stores, mass merchandisers, membership stores, natural food chains, commercial and noncommercial foodservice distributors and operators, restaurants, and convenience stores, as well as to drug, dollar, and discount chains. Further, it owns retail shops that offer ice creams and frozen desserts. General Mills, Inc. also exports its products primarily to Caribbean and Latin American markets. The company was founded in 1928 and is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

General Mills Opens New Innovation Center in China

General Mills inaugurated the company's first innovation, technology and quality center in China, signaling a commitment to drive greater innovation and investment in one of the company's growth markets. The $15 million facility, spanning 75,000 square feet, is the first major technical center outside of the General Mills worldwide headquarters in Minneapolis. The complex will focus on developing high-quality products for Chinese consumers including snacks, convenient meals, yogurt and super-premium ice cream. Inside it will house centers for product research and development, food safety, food nutrition research, and food sensory evaluation. General Mills also operates technical centers in Minneapolis, France, India and Brazil. In addition, the company's Cereal Partners Worldwide joint venture with Nestle has a research center in Switzerland. The company also is preparing to enter the $8 billion yogurt category and has begun construction on a new manufacturing facility in the region.

General Mills, Inc. announced that it is expanding geographic presence. It'll open over 80 new shops in fiscal 2015, enter 16 new cities and install over 2,000 new freezers in retail stores.

General Mills Eyes Acquisitions

General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) intends to make acquisitions. Chris O'Leary, Chief Operating Officer of International of the company said: “We continue to be on the lookout for acquisition targets across this region particularly in India and Indonesia where we have the desire to broaden our scale.” He added: “We will continue to be on the lookout for acquisitions that could enhance our scale in key emerging markets like India, Indonesia and the Middle East.” Don Mulligan, Chief Financial Officer of the company said: “As for acquisitions as potential use of cash, let me reiterate our thinking. We do have interest in acquisitions that would add to our scale in emerging markets as Chris mentioned, India and Indonesia are our focus areas there and we have interest in acquisitions that would fit strategically with our five global platform. So we are looking. But the 2015 plans we have outlined today are based on the very attractive growth opportunities we have across our existing businesses.”
