Live India Selects End-to-End Contribution Solution from Harmonic to Improve Connectivity and Video Quality

Harmonic announced that Live India has chosen an end-to-end contribution solution from Harmonic to improve video quality and optimize connectivity between the organization's regional news bureaus and main headquarters in Noida. Harmonic's Ellipse(R) 3100 contribution encoders and ProView(TM) 7100 integrated receiver-decoders (IRDs) provide Live India with a high-density, scalable, and bandwidth-efficient solution for fixed contribution applications, enabling the broadcaster to cost-effectively expand from two to five streaming news channels. By more than doubling its channel lineup, Live India can now ensure that viewers across India are able to stay abreast of important breaking news and live events. Live India chose Harmonic's contribution solutions based on superior performance and support for a wide range of broadcast standards and formats, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVB-S2, SD, HD, and MP4, that allow for increased flexibility, bandwidth savings, and exceptional video quality. As Live India adds more channels in the future, Harmonic's solutions will provide the broadcaster with easy scalability at an affordable price point. Live India is using the Ellipse encoders in combination with Harmonic's ProView 7100 IRDs. The solution lowers the broadcaster's capital and operational expenses. Harmonic's ProView 7100 IRDs provide Live India with a 1RU, scalable, multiformat IRD, transcoder, and MPEG stream processor designed to increase workflow efficiencies and video quality for contribution applications. After Live India compresses live content using the Ellipse encoders, Harmonic's ProView 7100 IRDs decompress the content at the same sampling and bitrate, resulting in nearly lossless video quality.

Harmonic Inc. Releases New Version of Spectrum Media Server Product Line

Harmonic has announced the release of version 7.6 of the company's Spectrum media server product line. With this release, the Spectrum MediaCenter (MCP-2200A) media server system now supports 20 channels eight more channels than previous models and up to 32 TB of integrated SAS storage in a compact 2-RU enclosure. The company also introduced a series of enhancements to the Spectrum ChannelPort integrated channel playout system and Spectrum MediaDeck server system that improve caption support, monitoring and scheduling capabilities, and integrated management tools. Ideally suited for transmission, studio production, news and sports highlights, and distributed broadcast workflows, the MediaCenter system allows users to simplify operation and maintenance while reducing overall rack space, power, and cost requirements. The high channel count (20 video channels at 50 Mbps or 10 channels at 100 Mbps) and increased SAS storage (approximately 1,200 hours at 50 Mbps) of the MCP-2200A are complemented by file transfer support for the ingest and export of clips, audio, and subtitle files. In addition to being easy to install and maintain, the system offers the rock-solid reliability for which the Spectrum product line is renowned. The MediaCenter system supports conventional ingest and playout operations when combined with MediaPort I/O systems. When combined with ChannelPort systems for integrated channel playout (ICP) applications, it provides robust functionality including graphic branding, DVE, key and fill, video and audio switching, and much more. The ChannelPort system itself has been augmented with open caption support, which enables caption files that have been imported into a Spectrum server to be played out frame-accurately with the caption text burned into the video as a graphic. This capability is ideal for play-to-air scenarios in which captioning is required for multilingual viewers or the hearing impaired, and its integration into the ChannelPort system reduces the need for costly downstream insertion equipment. A new Monitor Mode for the ChannelPort system enables each simulcast port to be used as a master control/gallery monitor wall output of the primary output, with timecode, clip status, and clip names burned into the video output. Operators thus gain at-a-glance access to on-air clips. The addition of a Schedule Tool application enables multiple users to create playlists that can later be played to air by Harmonic's OPC (Onboard Playlist Control) automation. In refining the company's MediaDeck server system, Harmonic has embedded all configuration, maintenance, and monitoring tools within the system chassis. The user is presented with a Web page showing alarms and messages, configuration tools, status configuration, and licensing information and maintenance tasks in an easy-to-use interface.

TTcomm Optimizes Satellite Delivery With Integrated Solution From Harmonic

Harmonic announced that TTcomm has selected an integrated video processing solution from Harmonic to support its satellite television services. Leveraging Harmonic's high-density, scalable video infrastructure solutions, TTcomm customers can affordably deliver high-quality live and VOD channels to subscribers throughout Europe. The Harmonic solution was purchased from JBD S.A., a major TV equipment supplier in Poland. The solution leverages Harmonic's market-leading Electra(TM) universal encoder, integrated with FLEX(R) decoding, provides MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC encoding for up to four statistically multiplexed SD and HD services within a single chassis. The high-density Electra encoders lower TTcomm's capital and operating expenses, simplifying the launch of additional television services while providing excellent video quality. In addition, the encoder features a scalable architecture that will grow as TTcomm's market requirements change. The solution integrates Electra encoders with Harmonic's award-winning ProStream(R) stream processor for statistical multiplexing of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 streams to increase bandwidth efficiency without impairing video quality. Utilizing the ProStream processor, the operator can support up to 64 services per statistically multiplexed pool, 16 pools per platform, and three pools within a single transport stream. The robust, extensible, and scalable ProStream processor supports multiplexing and scrambling of DVB SimulCrypt as well as AES scrambling applications. With a range of widely implemented industry protocols, the ProStream solution's scrambling technology guarantees the protection of TTcomm's video content. The solution of Electra encoders and ProStream processors is controlled by Harmonic's NMX(TM) Digital Service Manager video network management solution, which provides mass configuring, monitoring and automated redundancy in centralized or distributed architectures.
