Hyundai Motor Group to Build New Business Centre in Seoul

Hyundai Motor Company announced that it is planning to build a new business centre in Seoul (South Korea), which the Group believes will help elevate its brand name further. Hyundai Motor Group acquired a new and bigger plot in Seoul, with plans to construct a larger global business headquarters at the new site, according to local publication Yonhap News Agency. The two major automotive brands under the group, Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors, along with their auto component affiliate Hyundai Mobis, won a bid to buy the 79,345-square-metre site from the state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation. The site is located in the Gangnam district, southern Seoul (South Korea). Hyundai will pay a record amount of KRW 10.55 trillion (USD 10.18 million) as the purchase price of the property and the consortium is said to be possessing adequate cash reserves to meet the cost of acquisition. The news report states that Hyundai and Kia had KRW 17.6 trillion and KRW 5.7 trillion in cash and convertible liquid assets, respectively, as of end-2013, while Hyundai Mobis reported cash reserves worth KRW 6.1 trillion. The consortium is expected to make the payment in full within the first year of acquisition. The Group plans to build a skyscraper office tower at the new land site, which will act as its global business headquarters. It also plans to build an automobile theme park, a convention centre, and other recreational servicing centres. Company insiders close to the matter revealed that Hyundai also plans to house an all-new test track inside the new global business centre, while it is also believed to be thinking of making the business centre as its centralised controlling tower, to oversee research and development activities in both South Korea as well as across the world. The first point of order that Hyundai is looking at is to bring most of its affiliates, if not all of them, under one roof. Hyundai-Kia's current headquarters in Yangjae, also in Seoul, is said to have become too small for its growing business, which currently houses only five affiliate companies and around 5,000 employees. However, Hyundai reports that it has about 30 affiliate companies that are conducting businesses in the city, employing 18,000 workers. Hyundai believes that a centralised working location of offices under a controlling tower is expected to result in better management of the resources and in improved decision-making.

Hyundai Motor Temp Workers Gain Regular Status in Court Case

A group of contract workers in the automotive industry has partly won their class action suit against Hyundai Motor. The company had previously designated them as non regular workers. The Seoul Central District Court ruled that the plaintiffs 994 employees of subcontractors for Hyundai Motor are to be regarded as employees 'directly hired by Hyundai Motor.' Though the 994 workers have been working alongside Hyundai Motor's regular workers at assembly lines, their labor contracts were through the company's subcontractors. As a result, the plaintiffs suffered from discrimination in terms of job security and wages. The court, however, partly accepted the plaintiffs' demand that the automaker provide them with delinquent wages, with the workers initially asking for KRW 58 billion ($55.7 million). In its verdict, it acknowledged KRW 23.1 billion of the KRW 58 billion. Hyundai Motor's non regular workers cry in front of the Seoul Central District Court after the verdict on their job status came out. The union for non regular workers at Hyundai Motor said in a statement that it would call on the company to give them into regular employee status 'under the court's ruling.' Over the past three years, some of the plaintiffs were dismissed and indicted on charges of leading illicit walkouts.
