Bharti Infratel To Buy Towers From Airtel, Vodafone And Idea

Bharti Infratel Limited (BSE:534816) is planning to buy towers from Bharti Airtel Limited (BSE:532454), Vodafone India Limited and Idea Cellular Ltd. (BSE:532822). Bharti Infratel is looking at buying Bharti Airtel's telecom towers in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and will also consider buying those of Vodafone and Idea Cellular in India if they are on sale, as Infratel looks to strengthen its footprint to tap business from telecom companies looking to expand their networks to meet data growth. Akhil Gupta, Chairman of Bharti Infratel said, "We could look at the Indian subcontinent — Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - acquiring towers from Airtel." Akhil added that if a deal does happen, it will be structured so that the transaction will be at an arm's length of each other. Akhil said, "Both Airtel and Infratel boards will have to be satisfied that it is a fair transaction." Gupta also said, "In India, the consolidation for us would be, for instance, a Vodafone which has got towers in our seven circles, or an Idea. We'll look at it if there is a possibility." Gupta said, "We have 15,000 towers in Africa, it's just too big for any one company. So, we would look at the various tower companies and see the best in each country. Automatically, it will get split between a few companies." Asked if Bharti is talking to all tower companies named above, Gupta said, "These are the names, so, certainly. Wherever deals can happen into mutually beneficial situations, we'll keep closing." Gupta added, "Acquiring other independent tower companies in India may not be an attractive idea since the potential targets look for financial investors, which would be different from Bharti Infratel's plans of having full control."
