Intel Enters Manufacturing Pact to Make Panaconic System-On Chips, Shares Edge Down

Intel announced that it signed an agreement to manufacture Panasonics' system-on-chips (SoCs) using Intel's 14nm low-power manufacturing process. Intel shares slipped slightly. Panasonic's next-generation SoCs will target audio visual-based equipment markets, and will seek enhanced power, performance and viewing experience for consumers.

Ford Motor Company and Intel Corporation Announces Joint Research Project

Ford Motor Company and Intel Corporation have announced a joint research project that reportedly explores new applications for interior cameras, using data from existing vehicle sensors to enhance the in-vehicle experience for drivers and passengers. The two companies are researching new opportunities for the connected car, including giving drivers the ability to remotely peer into their car using a smartphone, or a vehicle that could identify its owner using facial recognition software. The joint research project, called Mobile Interior Imaging, or Project Mobii, explores how interior-facing cameras could be integrated with sensor technology and data already generated within and around the vehicle to create a more personalized and seamless interaction between driver and vehicle that transforms the driving experience. The Mobii research was collaboration between Intel ethnographers, anthropologists and engineers alongside Ford research engineers, and incorporates perceptual computing technology to offer a more enjoyable and intuitive vehicle experience. Upon entering the vehicle, the driver is authenticated by Project Mobii through a front-facing camera using facial software recognition. The in-car experience is then personalized to display information specific to that driver, such as calendar, music and contacts. If Project Mobii does not recognize the driver, a photo is sent to the primary vehicle owner's smartphone. That owner can then set permissions and specify features that should be enabled or disabled. If the driver is the child of the vehicle owner, for example, restrictions could be automatically set to require safety belt use and to limit speed, audio volume or mobile phone use while driving. Gesture recognition software enables intuitive interaction for the driver. A combination of natural gestures and simple voice commands can simplify such tasks as turning the heat up and down, or opening and closing a sunroof while driving.

Cloudera, Dell and Intel Advance Enterprise Deployments of Apache Hadoop with Deeper Engineering Partnership

Building on their deep engineering partnership, Cloudera, Dell and Intel announced the intent to launch a dedicated Dell In-Memory Appliance for Cloudera Enterprise. This technical achievement represents a unique collaboration of partners within the big data ecosystem, integrating hardware and software to help enterprises capitalize on high-performance data analysis by incorporating real-time data streams into their applications. This is the first of a family of highly optimized appliances that Dell, Intel and Cloudera will collaborate on which will be known as Dell Engineered Systems for Cloudera Enterprise. Dell, Cloudera and Intel recognize the complexity of building a modern data center and combined their areas of expertise to design an integrated solution that no one vendor could provide on its own. Driven by collaboration with the open source community and efforts across Dell, Intel and Cloudera, the Dell appliance is a best of breed big data solution stack. Designed from the silicon up, this appliance can enable certain applications to run up to 100x faster, is easy to use and deploy, and is compatible with existing solutions.
