Intraop Medical Corporation engages in the development, manufacture, marketing, distribution, and servicing of its Mobetron system. Mobetron system is a mobile electron-beam cancer treatment system designed for use in intraoperative electron-beam radiation therapy (IOERT) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). The IOERT procedure involves the direct application of radiation to a tumor and/or tumor bed while a patient is undergoing surgery for cancer. The EBRT is the external application of radiation to the tumor site while the patient is undergoing treatment for skin cancer. The company’s Mobetron system is also used as a conventional radiotherapy electron-beam accelerator. IntraOp distributes its products directly in the United States, and through a network of distributors and sales agents worldwide. The company was founded in 1999 and is based in Sunnyvale, California.
intraop medical corp (IOPD) Key Developments
Intraop Medical Corp. announced that the German Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the company, upholding its patent for a mobile IOERT linear accelerator with "straight through" accelerator guide design without a bending magnet with a slight clarification. IntraOp Medical's European Patent EP 0 700 578 covers for Germany an electron linear accelerator treatment device, which is suitable for Intra-Operative Electron Beam Radiation Therapy (IOERT). The court maintained the patent with a slight revision to explain more clearly the device.
Intraop Medical Corp. announced that Helios Berlin Buch became the fourth German hospital and the nineteenth European hospital to purchase a Mobetron for Intra-Operative Electron Radiation Therapy (IOERT). IntraOp's Mobetron is a mobile, self-shielded, device that delivers radiation directly to the tumor site during cancer surgery protecting surrounding body structures from radiation. This procedure is called IORT. The Mobetron uses electron radiation, IOERT, which is the fastest, safest, most versatile, and precise way to deliver radiation therapy. The Mobetron delivers concentrated electron radiation directly to the exposed tumor bed to an exact depth during cancer surgery.
Intraop Medical Corp. announced that the AMA has released new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes that will be reported by hospitals, physicians and ambulatory centers providing coverage for additional treatment options for cancer patients. The new CPT codes, 77425 Intraoperative radiation treatment (IORT) delivery, electrons, single treatment session and 77469 for Intraoperative radiation treatment management, open new options for a single radiation treatment session for cancer patients. Details specific to reimbursement will be announced later 2011 and the new codes will be available for use on January 1, 2012. These patients will benefit from a reduction of up to seven weeks of external beam radiation, also reducing the toxicity of their treatment and providing a quick return their normal lives.
