itron inc (ITRI) Key Developments

Itron Seeks Acquisitions

Itron, Inc. (NasdaqGS:ITRI) is seeking acquisitions. Philip Mezey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Itron, said, "We are building out software analytics ourselves, but there are cases in which we can really accelerate that business model through acquisitions. So in order to get there, I expect a combination of both of those to go on. But there are some nice acquisition opportunities for us to accelerate that business.

City of Bismarck Selects Itron, Inc

Itron, Inc. announced that the City of Bismarck has selected Itron to help modernize its water distribution system and will manage the system using the Itron network deployed by Montana-Dakota Utilities Company (MDU), provider of electric and natural gas service to parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. This public-private partnership is the first instance in which two utilities are cooperating to share a communications network where a city's entire meter population is being managed. Bismarck will use Itron's advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution along with Itron Analytics as a service and Itron Services to improve operational efficiencies and streamline meter reading. With the Itron solution, Bismarck can reliably collect water consumption and transform it into valuable and actionable intelligence across the utility. The solution will provide Bismarck with detailed usage information to improve customer service, protect revenue and better manage water resources. With Itron Analytics, the utility will be able to gain more value from its advanced metering investment to improve utility operations and asset management. The Itron solution being installed in Bismarck includes 21,000 water communication modules and associated collection technologies. In addition, Bismarck entered into an agreement with MDU in which MDU will provide water meter readings to Bismarck using its existing Itron fixed network. The project will not impact MDU customer billing, but rather will provide a cost-effective solution for both utilities through a shared network. Installation of the solution will begin in late summer and is expected to be completed within 18 months.

CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd Tests Next Generation Itron, Inc. Technology

Itron, Inc. announced that CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd. (CLP Power), will test Itron's new Adaptive Communications Technology, running on CLP Power's installed OpenWay(R) smart grid platform and network. Itron's latest technology provides flexible communications, computing power and intelligence at the edge of the network. With these new capabilities, meters and other grid devices can process, analyze, communicate and react in real-time, intelligently switching communication modes between Power Line Carrier (PLC) and radio frequency (RF) to provide optimal network performance with assured connectivity. This intelligence at the meter also supports new, real-time analytic applications at the device and field area network level, such as load management and distribution automation. Itron's Adaptive Communications Technology combines RF mesh and PLC communications on the same chip set, which is powered by an advanced microcontroller running a Linux-based operating system. This enables dynamic selection of the optimal communications path based on network operating conditions, data attributes and application requirements. With adaptive communication capabilities, deployment of network infrastructure is easier, faster and less costly. It also greatly reduces the amount of time and effort needed for upfront network design and propagation studies. Itron is first in bringing this new technology to the Asia-Pacific market to address the deployment and network performance challenges presented by dense, urban environments. CLP Power is the first utility to test Itron's Adaptive Communications Technology. Hong Kong's urban environment with many high rise buildings and enclosed meter rooms presents a number of network connectivity challenges for any smart grid solution. CLP Power and Itron are working closely together to test the technology, which brings together RF and PLC mesh to simplify deployment and improve connectivity across the Hong Kong environment. The technology will also be tested in Hong Kong's less dense rural villages.
