The Kroger Co., together with its subsidiaries, operates as a retailer in the United States. The company also manufactures and processes food for sale in its supermarkets. It operates retail food and drug stores, multi-department stores, jewelry stores, and convenience stores. The company’s combination food and drug stores provide natural food and organic sections, pharmacies, general merchandise, pet centers, fresh seafood, and organic produce. Its multi-department stores sell a range of general merchandise items, such as apparel, home fashion and furnishings, electronics, automotive products, toys, and fine jewelry. The company’s marketplace stores include full-service grocery and pharmacy departments, as well as general merchandise comprising outdoor living products, electronics, home goods, and toys. Its price impact warehouse stores provide grocery, and health and beauty care items, as well as meat, dairy, baked goods, and fresh produce items. The company operates supermarkets and multi-department stores under two dozen banners, including Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Jay C, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs, and Smith’s. As of February 2, 2013, it operated 2,424 supermarkets and multi-department stores, of these stores 1,169 had fuel centers, as well as operated 786 convenience stores and 328 fine jewelry stores. According to The Wall Street Journal, two more private-equity firms have come up as potential buyers for Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. (NYSE:HTSI). According to the news report, Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. is considering a number of grocery chains for potential bids, including Harris Teeter. The report added that Bain Capital Private Equity is also interested in purchase. According to the news report, Bain did not return a request from the Charlotte Business Journal and Peter Duda, a spokesman for Cerberus said, “Per policy, Cerberus doesn't comment on market rumor and speculation. Harris Teeter also declined to comment. Harris Teeter has announced in February 2013 that it had retained J.P. Morgan Securities LLC as a financial adviser to assist the company as it considered strategic alternatives. Till now Koninklijke Ahold N.V. (ENXTAM:AH), The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) have also been included in possible interested firms. Publix Super Markets, Inc. has said previously speculation about its interest in Harris Teeter is just a rumor.
The Kroger Co. unveiled a clean energy production system that will convert food that cannot be sold or donated into clean energy to help power its Ralphs/Food 4 Less distribution center in Compton, CA. The anaerobic conversion system will process more than 55,000 tons of organic food waste into renewable energy annually, providing power for the more than 650,000 square foot distribution center. By diverting that food waste, the equivalent of 150 tons per day, the system will also reduce area truck trips by more than 500,000 miles each year. The Kroger Recovery System uses a sophisticated process to convert the carbon in organic material into a renewable source of methane.
The Kroger Co. announced Scott M. Henderson has been named Vice President of Pension Investment and Strategy, and Todd A. Foley has been named Vice President and Treasurer, effective with their elections by Kroger's Board of Directors expected on June 27, 2013. Mr. Henderson, 57, currently serves as Kroger's vice president and treasurer, a position he has held since 2003. He will lead a new team that is responsible for overseeing nearly $12 billion of assets. Mr. Foley, 43, currently serves as Kroger's assistant corporate controller. He replaces Mr. Henderson as treasurer. Mr. Foley's replacement will be named at a later date.
