The company’s combination food and drug stores offer natural food and organic sections, pharmacies, general merchandise, pet centers, fresh seafood, and organic produce; multi-department stores provide general merchandise items comprising apparel, home fashion and furnishings, electronics, automotive products, toys, and fine jewelry; and price impact warehouse stores provide grocery, and health and beauty care items, as well as meat, dairy, baked goods, and fresh produce items. Its marketplace stores include full-service grocery, pharmacy and health, and beauty departments, as well as perishable and general merchandise, such as apparel, home goods, and toys. The company operates supermarkets and multi-department stores under two dozen banners, including Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Harris Teeter, Jay C, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs, and Smith’s. As of February 1, 2014, it operated 2,640 supermarkets and multi-department stores, of these stores 1,240 had fuel centers; and 320 fine jewelry stores, as well as operated 786 convenience stores either directly or through franchisees. The company was founded in 1883 and is based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Kroger Co. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended August 16, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported sales of $25,310 million compared to $22,686 million a year ago. Operating profit was $644 million compared to $595 million a year ago. Net earnings before income tax expense were $532 million compared to $496 million a year ago. Net earnings attributable to the company were $347 million or $0.70 per diluted share compared to $317 million or $0.60 per diluted share a year ago. For the six months period, the company reported sales of $58,271 million compared to $52,683 million a year ago. Operating profit was $1,574 million compared to $1,474 million a year ago. Net earnings before income tax expense were $1,315 million compared to $1,246 million a year ago. Net earnings attributable to the company were $848 million or $1.68 per diluted share compared to $798 million or $1.52 per diluted share a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $2,750 million compared to $2,613 million a year ago. Payments for property and equipment, including payments for lease buyouts were $1,347 million compared to $1,110 million a year ago. Return on invested capital was 13.6% compared to 13.5% a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA was $4,801 million compared to $4,333 million a year ago. Based on the second quarter results, the company raised and narrowed its adjusted net earnings per diluted share guidance to a range of $3.22 to $3.28 for fiscal 2014. The previous guidance was $3.19 to $3.27 per diluted share. The company continues to expect capital investments excluding mergers, acquisitions and purchases of leased facilities, to be in the $2.8 to $3.0 billion range for the year, including those for Harris Teeter.
