Lonmin Plans to Cut About 5,700 Jobs

Lonmin aims to cut about 5,700 jobs, 21% of its South African workforce, as part of a drive to increase profits after a five-month wage strike the year 2014. The plan would see the closure of four to six of the company's 11 shafts. Job cuts could trigger more labour unrest, including strikes by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). A key reason for the restructuring is announced to be the wage settlements reached in June with AMCU to end the strike, which will see its members get pay increases of up to about 20% a year for the next three years.

Lonmin plc Announces Executive Changes

Lonmin plc announced that Johan Lesley Viljoen, a seasoned mining engineer and leader, joins the company in chief operating officer with immediate effect. This newly created position is the substitution of two existing positions: executive vice president for mining and executive vice president for processing. The executives who had held those two roles, Mark Munroe and Natascha Viljoen, will now leave the company. He brings a wealth of experience in mining, having spent 37 years in operational management and leadership roles at Gold Fields, Anglo American and AngloGold Ashanti. Most recently, Johan has been running Sfeer.

For the quarter, the company announced tonnes mined of 285 kt compared to 2,823 kt, total ounces mined of 30,374 oz compared to 349,080 oz and total tonnes milled of 383 kt compared to 2,812 kt for the last year. For the nine months, the company announced tonnes mined of 3,421 kt compared to 8,394 kt, total ounces mined of 434,100 oz compared to 1,035,900 oz and total tonnes milled of 3,574 kt compared to 8,263 kt for the last year.
