Millicom Launches 4G in Bolivia

Millicom announced that Tigo in Bolivia has launched a 4G high-speed internet service offering users up to 100 Mbps. Bolivia has more than three million internet users, with 95% going online via a mobile connection. Tigo's offer includes a strongly-promoted $50 per month service allowing multiple devices to connect via a Mifi link. At launch, over 50% of the country's 10.5 m population will be able to access the 4G service and this will increase to 70% of Bolivian people in 170 municipalities by 2018.

Millicom Reports Earnings Results for the Second Quarter and Six Months Ended June 2014; Reaffirms CapEx Guidance for 2014

Millicom reported earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 2014. The company had revenues accelerating 9% organically, 6.6% on a reported basis, taking revenues to the quarter to $1.45 billion. And that partially reflects very strong revenue growth in Colombia, Africa in the cable media business. EBITDA ended the quarter at $479 million, again, in line with the first quarter under the margin of 33.1% in the quarter and 33.5% year-to-date. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.27. Reported EPS was $1.86. CapEx is rolling out, came in at $367 million on a balance sheet basis, but adjusting for the noncash element, which is largely the Chad license which was booked but not funded in the quarter, the cash CapEx was $321 million. Operating free cash flow, which is after-tax OCS, was in line with first quarter and a little bit above second quarter of last year. The company reported negative equity free cash flow of $40 million. For the six months, EBITDA was under the margin of 33.5%. Net debt was $2.6 billion. The company expects to meet guidance of 19% on CapEx overall for 2014.

Millicom International Cellular Launches EduMe English Service

Millicom International Cellular announced the launch of its EduMe English service, a low-cost mobile English language learning course that is available to Tigo's customers in Rwanda by subscription or on demand. EduMe English is a new way to learn English on any mobile phone, offering the student the opportunity to decide when and where to learn. EduMe English is the first product to be launched by EduMe, company's global educational service using mobile and internet technology to provide access to high quality education in Africa and Latin America. Following the launch of EduMe English in Rwanda, EduMe English is due to launch in El Salvador and Tanzania in the coming months. Additionally, EduMe Tutor, a phone- and Skype-based English language tutoring service, has been launched in beta mode in El Salvador with a live service following shortly. EduMe will also launch an entrepreneurship course under its EduMe Business School brand to Tigo subscribers in Tanzania during the third quarter of 2014. The course is developed in co-operation with GSMA. EduMe English is developed by international experts in language learning and follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. EduMe English combines listening, reading and speaking training through text lessons, quizzes and audio sessions where students select courses that gradually increase in difficulty. These combine high quality content recorded by native English speakers with instructions in Kinyarwanda, the local language spoken by many Rwandans.
