Marriott International to Expand its Residence Inn, in Gulf Cooperation Council Countries

Marriott International plans to expand its Residence Inn, in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Residence Inn, which has one property in Bahrain, expects to have two more properties in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia this year, which are expected to open in September and November respectively. Another property in Saudi Arabia is set to open in 2018. Residence Inn could also enter the Dubai market, according to Mayer. Marriott International plans to have 10,000 rooms in the emirate by 2020 compared to 2,700 rooms. Residence Inn has 20 hotels in the pipeline for the Middle East and Africa, which are likely to open in the next two to three years.

Marriott Opens Renaissance Hotel in Chengdu, China

Marriott has expanded its portfolio of Renaissance Hotels in China with the opening of the 348-room Renaissance Chengdu Hotel. The hotel is being operated under a management agreement with Sichuan Master Investment Group. The hotel offers 348 rooms that feature panoramic city views, including 29 suites, and two luxurious Presidential and Chief Executive Officer suites. The hotel features seven club floors, which offer an exclusive array of amenities via the 29th floor club lounge, including a daily buffet breakfast with live cooking stations, afternoon high tea and evening cocktails. Club members can also make use of use a complimentary two-hour executive meeting room. Renaissance Chengdu Hotel offers guests a variety of opportunities for culinary discovery including BLD Café, which features buffet and a la carte culinary delights; upscale Chinese restaurant, Wan Li, featuring a menu of authentic Cantonese and Sichuanese cuisine; The R Bar is the centerpiece of the lobby where guests can enjoy a cup of coffee, Chinese afternoon tea, wine, or a specialty "R" cocktail in the evenings. Renaissance Chengdu Hotel features 1,322 square meters of meeting space across nine rooms, including a grand ballroom with a nearly seven meter ceiling. A host of other amenities can be found at the hotel including a full service business center, a 24-hour fitness center, and an outdoor swimming pool. Located north of the Tianfu Interchange Bridge, nearby to the city's main commercial, entertainment, and shopping areas, the hotel provides quick and easy access to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.

Arthur Gillis to Join Marriott International as Non-Executive Chairman, Africa Development

Marriott International, Inc. nearly doubled its presence in its Middle East and Africa region to more than 160 hotels and 23,000 rooms as it completed its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group (PHG), based in South Africa. Mr. Arthur Gillis will become Non-Executive Chairman, Africa Development for Marriott International, focusing on exploring opportunities for new African hotel growth for all of Marriott International's brands. In addition, Mark Satterfield, currently chief operations officer for Marriott International's MEA region, will relocate to Cape Town, Protea's headquarters, to act as business leader overseeing the integration of the two companies. He will continue to report to Mr. Kyriakidis.
