Dorval is suing the local McDonald's restaurant outlet, claiming that it damaged the sanitary sewers with discarded grease. Just over two years ago, municipal inspectors discovered sewage lines near the McDonald's restaurant on the Highway 20 service road just east of Fénelon Blvd. were blocked by accumulated grease. The city then hired a contractor, Veolia Environnement, to mitigate damage to the sewer pipes, which were backed up. The city claims that the damage was a result of the restaurant's inadequate drainage system and the grease derived from its operations, state documents recently filed in Quebec Superior Court. The city opted to take court action after the restaurant either refused or neglected to pay a $14,185 bill to cover the cost of cleaning up the grease and unblocking the pipes in question. The city is seeking reimbursement of that amount plus interest, as well as legal cost.

McDonald's Corp. reported sales results for the month and year to date ended April 2013. For the month, the company’s global comparable sales decreased 0.6% compared to an increase of 3.3% a year ago. Systemwide sales for the month decreased 0.4% and increased 1.9% in constant currencies. For the year to date, the company’s comparable sales decreased to 0.9% compared to an increase of 6.2 % a year ago. System wide sales decreased to 0.1% and an increase of 1.7% in constant currency basis.

Thirty-year-old Jeffrey Schuyler filed a class action suit against McDonald's Corp. and franchise owner Ralph Crawford, who owns 13 McDonald's restaurants in Central New York. Schuyler claims that supervisors in Crawford's restaurants routinely alter employees' hours on the company's computerized time-keeping system, thus denying them the proper compensation. Schuyler discovered the time-shaving problem in January and complained to his supervisors. McDonald's paid him $1,000 to compensate him for his lost wages, but the problem persisted, according to the suit. Schuyler complained directly to Crawford, who then fired him. Crawford denies that he fired Schuyler. Schuyler says McDonald's is also liable for the workers' lost wages because it didn't catch the 'extraordinarily high number' of altered hours at Crawford's restaurants. The suit could encompass as many as 500 similarly situated workers.
