It operates in six segments: Retail; Group, Voluntary & Worksite Benefits; Corporate Benefit Funding; Latin America; Asia; and Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The company provides variable, universal, term, and whole life products; individual disability income products; personal lines property and casualty insurance, including private passenger automobile, homeowners, and personal excess liability insurance; and variable and fixed annuities for asset accumulation and distribution needs, as well as mutual funds and other securities products. It also offers group insurance products, such as variable, universal, and term life products; dental, group short- and long-term disability, and accidental death and dismemberment coverages; and voluntary and worksite products consisting of personal lines property and casualty insurance, as well as LTC, prepaid legal plans, and critical illness products. In addition, the company provides annuity and investment products comprising guaranteed interest products and other stable value products, income annuities, and separate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets; and structured settlements and products to fund postretirement benefits and company-, bank- or trust-owned life insurance, as well as health insurance, group medical, credit insurance, endowment, retirement, and savings products. It serves individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their employees. The company sells its products through sales forces, third-party organizations, independent agents, and property and casualty specialists, as well as through career agency, bancassurance, direct marketing, brokerage, and e-commerce channels. MetLife, Inc. was founded in 1863 and is based in New York, New York.

MetLife, Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported total operating revenues of $17,801 million against $16,995 million a year ago. Operating earnings before provision for income tax was $2,239 million against $2,235 million a year ago. Operating earnings available to common shareholders was $1,590 million or $1.39 earnings per share against $1,585 million or $1.43 earnings per share a year ago. Net income attributable to the shareholders was $1,335 million or $1.17 earnings per share against $471 million or $0.43 earnings per share a year ago. Book value per common share was $59.66 against $52.85 a year ago. Income from continuing operations, net of income tax was $1,376 million against $508 million a year ago. Return on companies’ common equity was 8.1%. Book value per share, excluding AOCI was $50.14 at June 30, up 2% from $49.34 at March 31. For the six months, the company reported total operating revenues of $34,917 million against $33,872 million a year ago. Operating earnings before provision for income tax was $4,435 million against $4,533 million a year ago. Operating earnings available to common shareholders was $3,152 million against $3,212 million a year ago. Net income attributable to the shareholders was $2,633 million against $1,427 million a year ago. Income from continuing operations, net of income tax was $2,718 million against $1,503 million a year ago. Annuities reported operating earnings of $399 million, up 8% versus the prior year. The primary driver was higher fees from separate account growth due to favorable equity market performance.

MetLife, Inc. and Norges Bank Investment Management Buy One Beacon Street Tower in Boston

MetLife, Inc. and Norges Bank Investment Management announced that they have bought the One Beacon Street office building in Boston for approximately $561 million. This is the second property investment in Boston and the fourth overall for the joint venture, which now has a real estate portfolio with a gross value of approximately $2.4 billion. MetLife and Norges Bank Investment Management bought the 34-story office tower from a joint venture of Beacon Capital Partners and insurer Allianz. MetLife will own 52.5% of One Beacon Street and be the managing member, while Norges Bank Investment Management will own the remaining 47.5%. Located in Boston's financial district, One Beacon Street is LEED Platinum certified and offers more than one million square feet of office space. Built in 1973, One Beacon Street is currently about 85% leased, with current tenants including the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Building Authority, Standard Life Investments (USA) Limited and JPMorgan Chase Bank, National Association.

MetLife, Inc. Appoints Rebecca Tadikonda as Chief Enterprise Strategy Officer, Effective July 21, 2014 Succeeding Kishore Ponnavolu

MetLife, Inc. announced that Rebecca Tadikonda will join the company as chief enterprise strategy officer effective July 21, 2014. She will report to Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Steven A. Kandarian. Tadikonda will lead a team responsible for MetLife's global strategy to drive top-line and bottom-line financial performance. She succeeds Kishore Ponnavolu, now president of MetLife Auto & Home. Tadikonda joins MetLife from Bain & Company, where she was a partner in the Financial Services practice.
