Metsä Board Oyj produces and sells forest fiber paperboards and supplies paper worldwide. It operates in two segments, Cartonboard, and Linerboard and Paper. The Cartonboard segment provides carton boards, graphic boards, wallpaper base grades, and cast-coated specialty papers; and offers integrated brand packaging services, including print management, packaging procurement, and carton design services. This segment serves carton printers, converters, brand owners, and merchants for end-uses, such as beauty care, cigarettes, consumer durables, foods, healthcare, graphics, and wall coverings. The Linerboard and Paper segment produces, markets, and sells coated and uncoated white-top kraftliners that are used in consumer, retail, and shelf-ready packaging, as well as in store solutions. This segment also offers uncoated fine papers mainly for office end-use, as well as coated papers. It also sells market pulp. The company, formerly known as M-real Oyj, is headquartered in Espoo, Finland.

Metsä Board Corporation's board of directors has appointed Mika Joukio as the company's new CEO. Joukio will start in the position on 1 December 2014 at the latest. Joukio joins Metsä Board from Metsä Tissue Corporation, part of Metsä Group, where he has been the CEO since 2012. Prior to Metsä Tissue, Joukio worked as the head of Metsä Board's paperboard business during 2006 to 2011.

Metsa Board Oyj announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported sales of EUR 501.2 million compared to EUR 535 million a year ago. Operating profit was EUR 43.5 million compared to EUR 34.8 million a year ago. Profit before income tax was EUR 26 million compared to EUR 8.5 million a year ago. Profit for the period was EUR 24.8 million compared to EUR 8 million a year ago. Earnings per share for result attributable to shareholders of parent company was EUR 0.08 compared to EUR 0.02 a year ago. Profit for the period attributable to shareholders of parent company was EUR 24.8 million compared to EUR 8 million a year ago. Net cash flow used in operating activities was EUR 19 million compared to net cash flow from operating activities of EUR 44.2 million a year ago. Investments in intangible and tangible assets were EUR 4.6 million compared to EUR 9.2 million a year ago. Operating profit excluding non-recurring items was EUR 36.1 million compared to EUR 30.2 million a year ago. Profit before taxes excluding non-recurring items was EUR 20.8 million compared to EUR 3.9 million a year ago. Earnings per share excluding non-recurring items were EUR 0.06 compared to EUR 0.01 a year ago. EBITDA was EUR 69.2 million compared to EUR 61.4 million a year ago. Return on equity was 11.6% compared to 3.8% a year ago. Return on capital employed was 11.2% compared to 7.7% a year ago. The operating result, excluding non-recurring items compared to the corresponding period last year, improved due to decrease in production costs, increase in the delivery volumes of folding boxboard and white-top fresh forest fibre linerboard, as well as increase in the prices of chemical and high-yield market pulp. The company's operating result, excluding non-recurring items, is in the second quarter of 2014 expected to weaken from the first quarter of 2014 due to the annual maintenance shutdowns at Husum mill integrate and at the associated company Metsä Fibre's Joutseno and Äänekoski pulp mills.
