3M Critical & Chronic Care Solutions Division announced the release of two new products, 3M(TM) Cavilon(TM) Bathing & Cleansing Wipes and 3M(TM) Cavilon(TM) 3-in-1 Total Care Cloths. The new offerings from company help clinicians to address the needs for efficacy and efficiency across care settings, and join the trusted line of Cavilon solutions used in incontinence care applications. A concern for both patients and caregivers, incontinence can lead to the development of Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD), which is a well-known risk factor in the development of pressure ulcers. IAD has been reported to occur in 42% of incontinent hospitalized adults and up to 95% of incontinent patients in the intensive care unit. In addition, approximately 50% of nursing home residents live with incontinence on a daily basis. The new Cavilon products help clinicians adhere to IAD prevention protocols and simplify care regimens for efficiency. According to recent clinical consensus use of a soft, disposable cloth is a preferred approach for incontinence cleansing. Cleansing, Moisturizing, Protecting. Both new Cavilon products combine gentle pH-balanced cleansing and emollient-based moisturizing ingredients, which help to maintain the skin's natural barrier. Cavilon 3-in-1 Total Care Cloths also provide protection from moisture and irritants through the use of dimethicone, an ingredient well-documented as an effective protective barrier. New 3M Bathing & Cleansing Wipes, which are useful for bathing as well as incontinence care, are compatible with company's protection barrier products, 3M(TM) Cavilon(TM) No Sting Barrier Film and 3M(TM) Cavilon(TM) Durable Barrier Cream.

Bruker Corporation has entered into a patent licensing agreement with 3M Company, which allows Bruker to include 3M patented innovations relating to matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization, or MALDI, mass spectrometry imaging. The licensed 3M patents are directed to a technique for performing mass spectrometry analysis on proteins in tissue that has been preserved in paraffin. The technology enables researchers to more easily study formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue for life-science research and drug development. MALDI imaging has been increasingly used to analyze clinically relevant tissues such as tumor biopsies. The molecular phenotypes observed by MALDI imaging have been shown to correlate with parameters such as disease status or patient outcome, and have been successfully applied to the classification of tissue samples.

3M Food Safety announced the launch of the 3M(TM) Petrifilm(TM) Salmonella Express System, a new pathogen detection technology that builds upon a solid platform of pathogen detection solutions. Immediately available worldwide, this system is focused on Salmonella, which comprises nearly half of all pathogen testing. Though not previously available as a pathogen test, 3M(TM) Petrifilm Plates have transformed the food processing industry to the point that 91 of the top 100 U.S. food processing companies now rely on them for their indicator testing needs. The new system has already received Performance Tested Method (PTM) validation (Certification Number 061301) from AOAC Research Institute. The 3M Petrifilm Salmonella Express System was found to be equivalent to or better than the reference methods for raw ground chicken, pasteurized liquid whole egg, raw ground beef, raw ground pork, cooked chicken nuggets, frozen uncooked shrimp, fresh bunched spinach, dry dog food and stainless steel. The easy-to-use system is an all-in-one method. First, the 3M(TM) Petrifilm(TM) Salmonella Express Plate is a sample-ready, chromogenic culture medium that is specific to Salmonella and provides a presumptive result. Next, the 3M(TM) Petrifilm(TM) Salmonella Express Confirmation Disk contains a substrate that facilitates the biochemical confirmation of all presumptive positive Salmonella colonies on the plate in just four hours. By way of comparison, when food processors outsource sample testing with a third-party contract lab, they'll commonly wait 24-72 hours for confirmation and pay a nominal amount for each presumptive positive colony requiring confirmation. With the addition of the 3M Petrifilm Salmonella Express System, 3M Food Safety's pathogen detection portfolio provides a total solution, offering molecular, immunoassay and indicator testing methods. DNA-based solutions include the highly innovative 3M(TM) Molecular Detection System introduced in December 2011, and the 3M Tecra(TM) Pathogen and Toxin Visual Immunoassay (VIA).
