Monsanto Company, together with its subsidiaries, provides agricultural products for farmers worldwide. It operates in two segments, Seeds and Genomics, and Agricultural Productivity. The Seeds and Genomics segment produces row crop seeds, including corn, soybean, cotton, and canola seeds principally under the DEKALB, Channel, Asgrow, and Deltapine brands; and vegetable seeds consisting of tomato, pepper, melon, cucumber, pumpkin, squash, beans, broccoli, onions, and lettuce seeds under the Seminis and De Ruiter brands. This segment also develops biotechnology traits that assist farmers in controlling insects and weeds in corn, cotton, and soybean crops under the SmartStax, YieldGard, YieldGard VT Triple, VT Triple PRO, and VT Double PRO, as well as Intacta RR2 PRO, Bollgard and Bollgard II, Roundup Ready and Roundup Ready 2 Yield, and Genuity brands; and licenses a range of germplasm and trait technologies to seed companies. The Agricultural Productivity segment manufactures and sells herbicides for agricultural, industrial, ornamental, turf, and residential lawn and garden applications for weed control, as well as for control of preemergent annual grass and small seeded broadleaf weeds in corn and other crops under the Roundup and Harness brands. The company sells its products through distributors, independent retailers and dealers, agricultural co-operatives, plant raisers, and agents, as well as directly to farmers. It has operations primarily in the United States, Europe, Africa, Brazil, the Asia-Pacific, Argentina, Canada, and Mexico. Monsanto Company has a strategic alliance with Novozymes A/S to discover, develop, and sell microbial solutions for farmers. The company was formerly known as Monsanto Ag Company and changed its name to Monsanto Company in March 2000. Monsanto Company was incorporated in 2000 and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.

Monsanto Company announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended February 28, 2014. For the quarter, the company announced net sales of $5,832 million compared to $5,472 million for the same period a year ago. Income from operations was $2,418 million compared to $2,112 million for the same period a year ago. Income from continuing operations before income taxes was $2,340 million compared to $2,082 million for the same period a year ago. Income from continuing operations including portion attributable to non controlling interest was $1,668 million or $3.15 per diluted share compared to $1,479 million or $2.73 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. Net income attributable to the company was $1,670 million or $3.15 per basic and diluted share compared to $1,483 million or $2.74 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. EBIT was $2,363 million compared to $2,096 million for the same period a year ago. For the quarter, the company reported adjusted EPS of $3.15. Profit jumped 12.7% to $1.67 billion compared with the same period a year ago, on growth in its core seeds and traits business. Revenue was $5.83 billion, up 6.6% from the second quarter of fiscal 2013. Net sales driven in part by solid growth in both its soybean and corn portfolios. For the six months, the company announced net sales of $8,975 million compared to $8,411 million for the same period a year ago. Income from operations was $2,983 million compared to $2,621 million for the same period a year ago. Income from continuing operations before income taxes was $2,856 million compared to $2,546 million for the same period a year ago. Income from continuing operations including portion attributable to non controlling interest was $2,032 million or $3.81 per diluted share compared to $1,821 million or $3.35 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. Net income attributable to the company was $2,038 million or $3.83 per diluted share compared to $1,822 million or $3.37 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. EBIT was $2,917 million compared to $2,586 million for the same period a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $1,846 million compared to $1,857 million for the same period a year ago. Capital expenditures were $471 million compared to $261 million for the same period a year ago. The company reaffirmed earnings guidance for fiscal 2014. For the full year, the company expects to report diluted earnings per share between $5.02 to $5.22. Diluted earnings per share from ongoing business expected to be between $5.00 to $5.20. Net cash provided by operating activities expected to be $2,900 million to $3,300 million. Free cash flow expected to be $600 million to $800 million.

Monsanto Forms New Company to Support Development of Biological Solutions

Monsanto has announced the formation of Preceres LLC to develop technologies to support agricultural biological products. Preceres LLC was created with founders Daniel Anderson Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Medical Engineering and Science at MIT and intramural member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, and Arturo Vegas, Ph.D., Research Associate at MIT. Under the terms of the agreement, Preceres LLC will have access to technology licensed from MIT to develop delivery agents to support the development of innovative biological solutions for farmers.
