Fairfax Revives Talk Of AUD 200 Million Macquarie Merger

Greg Hywood, Chief Executive Officer of Fairfax Media Limited (ASX:FXJ) suggested that Fairfax could revive collapsed AUD 200 million radio merger talks with Macquarie Radio Network Limited (ASX:MRN) in the future. Merger talks with Macquarie failed in February after a row over ensuring Macquarie shock jocks Alan Jones and Ray Hadley would be part of the deal. The fallout triggered a robust exchange of words between both sides. Roger Corbett, Chairman of Fairfax has been attacked in the press by Singleton since the radio talks failed. Hywood said the merger talks, which had been going on since October - and followed failed talks held two years earlier - had caused "instability" within Fairfax's radio business. "People were not focused," said Hywood. He said the radio team, under Managing Director Adam Lang, "bounced back" once the talks were resolved. Hywood added that, "We've always seen that a consolidation of radio talk, news and sport is a pretty rational thing to do. It didn't occur for a variety of reasons. It doesn't mean it won’t occur in the future."
