Marvell announced its partnership with Swisscom to introduce the industry's first 802.11ac Android IPTV set-top box powered by Marvell's ARMADA(R) 1500 Plus (88DE3108) system-on-chip (SoC) platform. A full HD media processor designed for a vast array of Smart video products, the ARMADA 1500 Plus Platform -- featuring Marvell's Avastar(R) 88W8897 Wi-Fi processor -- will power Swisscom's TV 2.0 set-top box, delivering high performance, enhanced connectivity and immersive HD video to the operator's more than 1 million subscribers to date. The Swisscom TV 2.0 set-top box is currently available to subscribers. The ARMADA 1500 Plus platform is designed to enable a broad range of innovative and low cost form factors such as small set-top-boxes, over-the-top media players, hybrid set-top boxes and Smart TVs. For this implementation with Swisscom, Marvell now supports one of the most prominent wireless protocols, 802.11ac, delivering high speed connectivity for HD video and multimedia content delivery. Key features of the ARMADA 1500 Plus platform: Operator grade conditional access system to secure premium 1080p content served over Swisscom's DSL/Fiber network (Verimatrix's VCAS for IPTV and VCAS for InternetTV) for LiveTV, VoD and CatchUp TV use cases; Premier viewing experience with FCC (Fast Channel Change) algorithms; Network PVR with Local Timeshift buffer; Playready DRM and Smooth Streaming for certain VOD services; Marvell's advanced Avastar 88W8897 combining 802.11ac 2x2 Wi-Fi solution with BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) supporting HOGP for an advanced remote controller for the STB. Key features of the Swisscom TV 2.0 Android IPTV Set-top box: Seven day replay on over 250 channels; Record any number of programmes in parallel in the cloud; Home TV screen featuring full Teleclub on-demand range, with a personalized recommendation engine; and app store presenting more than 50 popular Apps.

Marvell Unveils New AC/DC LE Driver Integrated Circuit

Marvell, has unveiled the Marvell 88EM8189, its new AC/DC LED driver integrated circuit, or IC. The Marvell 88EM8189 features I2C compatible digital interface integration to connect with a networking microcontroller that runs a lighting control protocol, such as Zigbee, for Smart wireless bulbs, providing premium dimming performance with a full dimming range from 100% to 1%. Marvell's 88EM8189 chip integrates a separate high efficiency AC to DC power supply circuit providing standby power dedicated to the networking chip; therefore, lowering the bill-of-materials (BOM) for the electronics and drastically driving down the price point. This implementation enables the lowest standby power consumption by the networking circuit in a Smart wireless bulb while the light is turned off, allowing the system solution to meet ENERGY STAR requirements. Built on the same technology as Marvell's phase cut LED driver chip the 88EM8187, Smart bulbs using the intelligent 88EM8189 chip are backward compatible with existing phase cut wall dimmers as a system level option. The Marvell 88EM8189 LED driver currently is sampling with global customers. Marvell's 88EM8189 LED driver IC is part of the Marvell Smart Lighting Platform which includes 88MZ100 ZigBee microcontroller, 88MC200 Wi-Fi microcontroller and a low cost ZigBee-to-Wi-Fi gateway solution. The Platform fully supports industry open protocols in ZigBee Home Automation (ZHA) and ZigBee Light Link (ZLL), and is accessible by mobile devices via Wi-Fi. Marvell built an ecosystem around the platform including original device manufacturers (ODMs) and cloud software partners to offer turn-key solution to end markets. Marvell's open architecture also allows the Smart bulb to be connected to home gateways offered by retailers and service providers. The benefits of the Marvell 88EM8189 driver include: single-stage fly-back or buck-boost topology; integrated digital interface I2C for connection to networking microcontroller to provide digital dimming through ZigBee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, PLC and other technologies; integrated AC-DC converter for bias power supply to networking microcontroller; backward compatible with phase cut wall dimmers worldwide; and reduced system BOM cost with two chip lamp solution - 88EM8189 plus connectivity device. The Marvell 88EM8189 driver also enables meeting ENERGY STAR power consumption (500mW standby) when light is off.

Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Unveils New Series of Marvell Prestera DX Packet Processors

Marvell Technology Group Ltd. unveiled a new series of Marvell Prestera DX packet processors that reportedly enable secure and power efficient solutions for a new generation of access networks. The Marvell Prestera DX product family continues the company's leadership in highly integrated packet switching in the 28nm process with an advanced System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture. The DX3300 and the DX3200 families are designed to simplify and secure these converged access deployments. Faster adoption of 10GbE-enabled servers are driving the need for DX8200 family of packet processors that offer compelling options for networking in the cost sensitive environments of the small and medium enterprises (SME) core and aggregation. The DX8216 packet processor is a highly optimized solution for 10GbE server connectivity in the SME environment. Coupled with the game changing Alaska-X family of 10GBase-T PHYs, these devices are designed to enable highly power efficient systems for that application. Advanced eBridging technology enables a host of virtualization capabilities, as well as OpenFlow 1.4 support. The DX3300-based systems enable feature rich and secure GbE and 10GbE access networking platforms. Armed with dual-core on-chip ARM CPUs, the DX3300 and the DX3200 families are capable of meeting the demanding access needs of the carrier, industrial and campus networks by enabling host management and embedding additional value-added security and monitoring applications or off-loading complex services like or OAM, PTP or DPI. Native integration of PHYs enables direct attached copper or fiber-based 10GbE network connections, as well as multi-system stacking. Support for the IEEE 802.1BR tunneling schemes also enable centralized management architectures and a port extender model of deployment in the enterprise. The DX3200 family of devices continues to address the needs for cost sensitive Gigabit Ethernet access for unmanaged and intelligent access networking solutions by providing an extremely power efficient design without compromising on the full complement of the features needed in such networks. A simple and efficient programming model enabled by Marvell's Core Prestra Software Suite is expected to reduce design complexity and system development schedules while accelerating network and service deployment. To shorten system manufacturers' design cycles and accelerate time-to-market, Marvell provides complete development platforms and reference designs with device drivers, schematics, layout files and other documentation. Marvell Prestera DX8216 integrates 16 ports of 10GbE with advanced eBridging architecture for native 10GbE server connectivity in the SMB/SME networks. Marvell Prestera DX3336 integrates a dual core ARM v7 CPU with 24 ports GbE, 2 ports of 10GbE and 2 ports of 20G stacking for Campus edge/access.
