Microsoft Corporation Reports Unaudited Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended September 30, 2014; Provides Tax Rate Guidance for the Full Year 2014

Microsoft Corporation reported unaudited earnings results for the first quarter ended September 30, 2014. For the period, the company reported net income of $4.54 billion, or 54 cents per share, down from $5.24 billion, or 62 cents per share, a year ago, due to over $1 billion in costs to restructure its business and integrate its purchase of Nokia devices. Revenue grew to $23.20 billion from $18.53 billion. The company said that revenue from cloud services, including software delivered over the Internet, more than doubled in the last quarter. That helped lift quarterly profit and revenue above expectations. Operating income was $5,844 million against $6,334 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $5,896 million against $6,408 million a year ago. Net cash from operations was $8,354 million against $8,205 million a year ago. Additions to property and equipment was $1,282 million against $1,231 million a year ago. Purchases of investments was $24,085 million against $14,768 million a year ago. Acquisition of companies, net of cash acquired, and purchases of intangible and other assets was $141 million against $15 million a year ago. Capital expenditure was $1.3 billion. Revenue hit a record high for its first fiscal quarter, aided by the popularity of its Xbox video game consoles and Surface tablet computers along with businesses turning to software offered as services in the Internet "cloud". The earnings results include the newly acquired handset division of Finland's Nokia, whose Windows-based smartphones are struggling in a market dominated by Google Android devices and Apple's iPhones. For 2014, the company expects tax rate to be between 20% and 22%, including the impact of integration and restructuring. The company expects CapEx to sequentially increase in support of growing cloud business.

IBM and Microsoft to Offer Greater Choice in the Hybrid Cloud

IBM and Microsoft announced that they are working together to provide their respective enterprise software on Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud. As adoption of hybrid cloud computing accelerates, this relationship will give clients, partners and developers more choice in the cloud, helping them drive new business opportunities, spur innovation and reduce costs. Specifically, the newly announced relationship provides the following client benefits: IBM and Microsoft will make key IBM middleware such as WebSphere Liberty, MQ, and DB2 available on Microsoft Azure. Windows Server and SQL Server will be offered on IBM Cloud. IBM and Microsoft are working together to deliver a Microsoft .NET runtime for IBM's Bluemix cloud development platform. To support hybrid cloud deployments, IBM will expand support of its software running on Windows Server Hyper-V, and the companies plan to make IBM Pure Application Service available on Azure. IBM and Microsoft will make key products within IBM's enterprise-proven middleware software portfolio, including WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere MQ and DB2 database software, available in the Microsoft Azure Virtual Machines service for development and production deployment. Microsoft and IBM are working together to provide .NET runtimes, along with relevant tooling, in IBM Bluemix, IBM's open cloud platform-as-a-service. This could open the door for millions of .NET developers to build applications at scale for clients on IBM's cloud platform. The companies will begin with a limited preview offering of .NET operating within Bluemix. The companies will enable customers to bring their own software licenses to the IBM and Microsoft clouds, helping customers avoid extra cost. Microsoft will also offer IBM middleware software licenses, such as WebSphere Liberty, MQ and DB2, to Azure customers with pay-per-use pricing. The companies also plan to make IBM Pure Application Service available on both Microsoft Azure and IBM SoftLayer for automated deployment, configuration and license management in a hybrid cloud environment.
