Spectra Energy Corp, through its subsidiaries, owns and operates a portfolio of natural gas-related energy assets in North America. The company’s U.S. Transmission segment engages in the transportation and storage of natural gas for customers in various regions of the northeastern and southeastern United States and the Maritime provinces in Canada. This segment’s natural gas pipeline systems consist of approximately 19,000 miles of transmission pipelines; and storage capacity comprises 305 billion cubic feet (Bcf). Its Distribution segment provides natural gas storage, transmission, and distribution services for residential, commercial, and industrial customers primarily in Canada. This segment has approximately 39,000 miles of main and service pipelines; storage capacity of approximately 160 Bcf; and transmission system of approximately 3,000 miles of pressure pipeline and mainline compressor stations. The company’s Western Canada Transmission and Processing segment offers natural gas transportation, and gas gathering and processing services; and provides services to natural gas producers to remove impurities from the raw gas stream, including water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and other substances. It is involved in the extraction, fractionation, transportation, storage, and marketing of natural gas liquids (NGLs) for western Canadian producers and NGL customers. This segment serves local distribution companies, end-use industrial and commercial customers, marketers, and exploration and production companies. Its Field Services segment gathers, processes, treats, compresses, transports, and stores natural gas, as well as fractionates, transports, gathers, treats, processes, stores, markets, and trades in NGLs. This segment owns or operates approximately 63,000 miles of gathering and transmission pipelines, as well as markets propane in the northeastern United States. The company was incorporated in 2006 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Spectra Energy Corp. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the period, the company reported operating revenues of $1,589 million, operating income of $506 million, income tax expense from continuing operations of $130 million, income from continuing operations of $370 million and net income of $370 million against operating revenues of $1,544 million, operating income of $519 million, income tax expense from continuing operations of $137 million, income from continuing operations of $359 million and net income of $361 million a year ago period. Net cash provided by operating activities was $582 million against $546 million a year ago period. The company reported 2013 first quarter net income from controlling interests of $340 million, or $0.51 diluted EPS, compared with $333 million, or $0.51 diluted EPS, in the prior year quarter. The effective tax rate was 26% in the first quarter of 2013, compared with 28% in the first quarter of 2012. The lower tax expense and effective tax rate was primarily driven by a lower Canadian effective tax rate. Book value per share as at March 31, 2013 was $13.36.
Spectra Energy Corp. has declared a quarterly cash dividend on its common stock of $0.305 per share. The dividend is payable on June 10, 2013, to shareholders of record at the close of business on May 10, 2013.
