Northern Trust Corporation reported consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company’s return on average common equity was 9.18%, compared to 10.02% in the prior year quarter and 9.3% in the prior quarter. Net income per diluted common share was $0.75 compared to $0.78 in the second quarter of 2013. Net income was $181.9 million, down $9.2 million, or 5%, from $191.1 million in the prior year quarter. Excluding the $42.3 million pre-tax charges and write-offs, net income per diluted common share and net income were $0.87 and $209.8 million, respectively. Revenue was $1,081.7 million against $1,020.5 million a year ago. Net interest income on a fully taxable equivalent (FTE) basis increased $25.4 million, or 11%, to $253.4 million compared to $228.0 million in the prior year quarter, due to higher levels of average earning assets, partially offset by a decrease in the net interest margin. Net interest income was $246.6 million against $220.1 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $270.7 million against $285.8 million a year ago. Return on average assets was 0.71%, compared to 0.83% in the prior year quarter and 9.3% in the prior quarter. Book value per share was $34.14. Equipment and software expense totaled $116.1 million. For the six months, the company’s net interest income was $492.3 million against $446.2 million a year ago. Total revenue was $2,122.2 million against $1,996.9 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $540.2 million against $528.3 million a year ago. Net income was $363.3 million or $1.50 per diluted share against $355.1 million or $1.45 per diluted share a year ago. Return on average common equity was 9.23% against 9.43% a year ago. Return on average assets was 0.72% against 0.78% a year ago. The company announced net charge-offs of $5.9 million for the second quarter ended June 30, 2014.
