Olympus Corporation manufactures and sells precision machineries and instruments worldwide. It operates in five segments: Medical, Life Science and Industrial, Imaging, Information and Communication, and Others. The Medical segment provides endoscopic video imaging, medical information, fiberscope, broncho endoscope, and endoscopic ultrasound systems; ultrasound probes and centers; capsule endoscopy systems; cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization systems; medical treatment peripherals; and ancillary products. This segment also offers endoscopy products for gastroenterological surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, and otolaryngology; treatment and surgical equipment; and peripherals, as well as endotherapy products. The Life Science and Industrial segment provides biological products, such as system and system biological microscopes, inverted biological microscopes, stereo and confocal laser scanning microscopes, single-molecule fluorescence detection systems, microscope system equipment, and peripherals; industrial microscope systems, including metallurgical and semiconductor inspection microscopes, flat-panel display inspection systems, laser microscopes, measuring microscopes, microscopic 3-D measurement systems, and peripherals; printers; and remote visual inspection products and non-destructive testing products. The Imaging segment offers digital cameras; optical components comprising lens barrels for digital cameras and optical materials; and IC recorders and binoculars. The Information and Communication segment sells mobile terminals, including mobile handsets. The Others segment manufactures and sells biomedical materials, as well as conducts system development and other business activities. The company was formerly known as Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. and changed its name to Olympus Corporation in October 2003. Olympus Corporation was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Olympus Corporation Reports Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended June 30, 2014; Provides Earnings Guidance for the Six Months Ending September 30, 2014 and the Year Ending March 31, 2015

Olympus Corporation reported consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported net sales of JPY 167,013 million compared to JPY 159,229 million a year ago. Operating income was JPY 15,053 million compared to JPY 8,166 million a year ago. Income before provision for income taxes was JPY 3,002 million compared to JPY 1,502 million a year ago. Net income was JPY 8,141 million or JPY 23.79 per share compared to net loss of JPY 1,831 million or JPY 6.08 per share a year ago. Fully diluted net income per share was JPY 23.79. For the six months ending September 30, 2014, the company expected consolidated net sales of JPY 360,000 million, operating income of JPY 35,000 million and net income of JPY 13,000 million or JPY 37.99 per share. For the operating cash flow, due to the cash flow that is generated from the robust Medical business and due to the reduction of the trade receivables, it had been able to double this compared to the previous year at JPY 21 billion. The company announced that the cash flow coming from investment activities, mainly through the capital expenditure-related expenditures, was a minus of JPY 8.3 billion. Free cash flow was a positive of JPY 12.7 billion. For the year ending March 31, 2015, the company expected consolidated net sales of JPY 760,000 million, operating income of JPY 88,000 million and net income of JPY 45,000 million or JPY 131.49 per basic share.
