Ormat Industries, Ltd. engages in the development, design, construction, and operation of power plants for the production of electricity from geothermal sources and recovered energy sources worldwide. The company operates through two segments, Electricity and Products. The Electricity segment engages in the maintenance and operation of wholly or partly owned power plants that utilize geothermal and recovered energy sources to produce and supply electric power to government or publicly owned utilities worldwide. The Products segment engages in the design, manufacture, and sale of equipment for electricity generation, primarily from geothermal and other renewable energy sources, and the installation thereof. This segment also provides services relating to the engineering, procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance of geothermal and recovered energy-based power plants. In addition, the Products segment engages in the design, development, and manufacture of turbines and power units for the supply of electrical energy. Ormat Industries also engages in the research and development of facilities for the production of biodiesel from either vegetarian oil or animal fat, as well as the development of feedstock for the production of vegetarian oil. As of April 31, 2007, the company owned and operated approximately 318 MW of geothermal and recovered energy-based power generating capacity in the United States. It also owned and operated geothermal power plant projects in Guatemala, Kenya, Nicaragua, and the Philippines, representing approximately 116 MW of generating capacity, as well as had approximately 226 MW of additional geothermal power capacity and 32.5 MW of recovered energy power generation capacity under various construction and development stages, as of the above date. Ormat Industries operates primarily in North America, Oceania, Latin America, Far East, Africa, Europe, and Israel. The company is based in Yavne, Israel.

Ormat Industries Ltd. announced that it intends to record a pre-tax, non-cash charge in a currently estimated amount of between $30 million and $40 million during the fourth quarter of 2012 for impairment to the company's Jersey Valley power plant based on International Financial Reporting Standards. The company has independently conducted its own impairment test for the Jersey Valley power plant in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and has concluded, based on the results of its examination, that no impairment charge is required under GAAP with respect to the Jersey Valley power plant.
