The Travelers Companies, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides various commercial and personal property, and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, government units, associations, and individuals in the United States. It operates in three segments: Business Insurance; Financial, Professional, and International Insurance; and Personal Insurance. The Business Insurance segment offers property and casualty products, such as commercial multi-peril, commercial property, general liability, commercial auto, and workers’ compensation insurance. This segment operates in six groups: Select Accounts, which serves small businesses; Commercial Accounts that serves mid-sized businesses; National Accounts, which serves large companies; Industry-Focused Underwriting that serves targeted industries; Target Risk Underwriting, which serves commercial businesses requiring specialized product underwriting, claims handling, and risk management services; and Specialized Distribution that offers products to customers through licensed wholesale agents and program managers. The Financial, Professional, and International Insurance segment provides surety and financial liability coverage, which uses credit-based underwriting processes; and property and casualty products primarily in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland. The Personal Insurance segment offers property and casualty insurance covering personal risks, primarily automobile and homeowners insurance to individuals. The company distributes its products primarily through independent agencies and brokers. The Travelers Companies, Inc. was founded in 1853 and is based in New York, New York.

The Travelers Companies, Inc. announced that Alan Schnitzer has been promoted to Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Business and International Insurance, and Doreen Spadorcia has been promoted to Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Personal Insurance and Bond & Financial Products, effective July 1, 2014. The Travelers Companies, Inc. Reports Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 31, 2014

The Travelers Companies, Inc. reported consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported net and operating income of $1.052 billion, or $2.95 per diluted share, compared to net income of $896 million, or $2.33 per diluted share, and operating income of $887 million, or $2.31 per diluted share in the prior year quarter. The increases in net and operating income compared to the prior year quarter primarily resulted from higher underlying underwriting gains (i.e., excluding prior year reserve development and catastrophe losses), higher net investment income and higher net favorable prior year reserve development, partially offset by higher catastrophe losses. Underlying underwriting gains in the current quarter included a $49 million after-tax ($76 million pre-tax) benefit resulting from a reduction in the estimated liability for state assessments to be paid by the company related to workers' compensation premiums. Net written premiums were $5,873 million against $5,597 million a year ago. Total revenues were $6,708 million against $6,328 a year ago. Income before income taxes was $1,220 million against $1,077 million a year ago. Net income per diluted share was $2.33 against $2.02 a year ago. Adjusted book value per share was $60.39 against $56.53 a year ago. Operating return on equity was 17.8% against 15.8% a year ago. Return on equity was 16.8% against 14.1% a year ago. Book value per share was $73.06 as on March 31, 2014 compared to $70.15 as on December 31, 2013. Adjusted book value per share was $68.25 as on March 31, 2014 compared to $66.41 as on December 31, 2013. Operating income before income taxes was $1,469 million against $1,210 million a year ago. Operating cash flows are very strong, a little over $700 million and up from $530 million in the prior year quarter.
