Panasonic Announces Establishment of Corporation of North America in Sparks, Nevada, US

Panasonic Corporation announced that it has established a new manufacturing company of lithium-ion batteries, Panasonic Energy Corporation of North America in Sparks, Nevada, the United States on October 1, 2014. Tesla and Panasonic have been working together in various collaborative projects toward the popularization and growth of electric vehicles since 2007. A new company, Panasonic Energy Corporation of North America will be built in the Tesla Gigafactory, a large-scale battery manufacturing plant which has been discussed between Tesla and Panasonic, and will produce and sell lithium-ion batteries. This new factory will enable a continuous reduction in the cost of long range battery packs in parallel with manufacturing at the volumes required to enable Tesla to meet its goal of advancing mass market electric vehicles. Through this cooperation, Panasonic will contribute to accelerate the expansion of the electric vehicle market.

Panasonic Corporation Develops Pin Shaped Lithium Ion Battery

Panasonic Corporation announced that it has developed a Pin Shaped Lithium Ion Battery (CG-320, nominal capacity 13mAh) with a diameter of 3.5mm and a weight of 0.6g suitable for powering small devices such as wearable devices. This product, on top of being the industry's smallest cylindrical shaped rechargeable Lithium Ion battery, features the high reliability and high output required for near-field communications. Mass production and shipping are planned to begin in February, 2015 with a monthly production of one hundred thousand units. The full-scale introduction of wearable device products, anticipated widely as the next wave in mobile devices after smartphones, is expected in a wide variety of applications from 2014. Rechargeable batteries, the power source for wearable devices, are expected to be not only small and light, but also to have a high level of reliability and performance. Panasonic has taken advantage of its battery material technology cultivated with lithium ion batteries used in information and communication equipment applications, and coin-shaped and other small lithium battery production technology, to commercialize this battery, which at 3.5mm is the industry's smallest pin-shaped lithium ion battery. This product is a rechargeable battery that can be used repeatedly and has the output capability required for NFC. A stainless steel can is used for the exterior providing for dimensional stability. It will be possible to ensure good design for slim devices such as pen-shaped or spectacles-shaped products. Panasonic will apply the know-how and technology cultivated from many years of material and production technology development to further expand the line-up of this new product, which is an innovation in battery technology. Applications are Wearable devices, electronic pens, medical devices such as hearing aids and measuring devices etc. Features are A pin-shaped, 3.5mm diameter lithium ion battery, the industry's smallest, which expands design options for small devices. Panasonic to Launch Convertible Laptop

Panasonic Corp. announced that it will release the "Let's note RZ4" notebook computer, which weighs about 745g (approx 1.64 pounds) and is equipped with a 10.1-inch LCD panel Oct. 17, 2014. It is the world's lightest notebook computer that can also be used a tablet computer ("2 in 1" type). Its expected retail price starts from ¥160,000 (approx $1,471). When closed, the RZ4 measures 250 x 180.8 x 19.5mm, which is equivalent to the size of a "semi B5-size" (paper) notebook. Its LCD panel is an IPS type and has a pixel count of 1,920 x 1,200. The touch panel is attached to the LCD panel by direct bonding. The light weight was realized by, for example, employing a structure that looks like the framework of a house and differs in thickness depending on the part (0.4 to 0.8mm). It is called VH Frame Structure.
