Pick n Pay Stores Limited, an investment holding company, operates as a food, grocery, and general merchandise retailer. The company owns, franchises, and invests in various store formats, such as hypermarkets, supermarkets, and clothing stores under the Pick n Pay, Boxer, Boxer Punch, and Boxer Build brands, which offer groceries, clothing, general merchandise, footwear, and building and hardware supplies. It also operates Pick n Pay Express stores, which provide quick meal solutions; and Pick n Pay liquor stores and Boxer Superliquors stores that offer a range of beers, cider, fruit alcoholic beverages, wines, fortified wines, and spirits, as well as operates 24 pharmacies. The company operates 1076 stores comprising 643 company-owned stores and 433 franchise stores in six southern African countries; and 52 stores in Zimbabwe. Pick n Pay Stores Limited also offers online shopping; and acquires and develops retail and distribution sites. The company was founded in 1967 and is headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa. Pick n Pay Stores Limited is a subsidiary of Pick n Pay Holdings Limited RF.

Pick n Pay Stores Ltd. Announces Audited Consolidated Earnings Results for the Fifty Two Weeks Ended March 2, 2014

Pick n Pay Stores Ltd. announced audited consolidated earnings results for the fifty two weeks ended March 2, 2014. For the period, total till sales were ZAR 73.0 billion against ZAR 67.8 billion a year ago. Turnover was ZAR 63.1 billion against ZAR 58.6 billion a year ago. Trading profit was ZAR 1,010.3 million against ZAR 751.7 million a year ago. Profit before tax was ZAR 833.1 million against ZAR 708.2 million a year ago. Diluted earnings per share was 120.01 cents against 113.39 cents a year ago. Headline diluted earnings per share was 136.46 cents against 109.61 cents a year ago. The Group increased turnover by 7.7% (compared to 6.2% the previous year). This was driven in part by an accelerated programme of new-store growth. The significant difference in the growth in headline earnings per share against basic earnings per share  is the exclusion of profits and losses of a capital nature in the calculation of headline earnings. Capital losses net of tax of ZAR 78.9 million are added back to headline earnings in 2014 (mainly comprising the impairment of intangible assets), against a deduction net of tax of ZAR 18.4 million of capital profits in 2013. Profit for the period was ZAR 583.7 million against ZAR 550.6 million a year ago. Net asset value per share was 645.6 cents against 586.0 cents a year ago. Cash generated by operating activities was ZAR 2,125.0 million against cash utilised in operating activities of ZAR 81.7 million a year ago. Investment in property, plant and equipment was ZAR 882.4 million against ZAR 970.1 million a year ago. Investment in intangible assets was ZAR 289.2 million against ZAR 242.4 million a year ago.
