pmc - sierra inc (PMCS) Details

PMC-Sierra, Inc. designs, develops, markets, and supports semiconductor solutions for communications network infrastructure worldwide. Its semiconductor devices enable networking equipment primarily in three markets: storage, optical, and mobile networks. The company’s storage products comprise RAID-on-Chip, controllers, expanders, loop switches/microprocessors, physical layer products, and MIPs processors that enable high-speed communication servers, switches, and storage devices to store, manage, and move large quantities of data. Its optical products include wide area network communication products focusing on metro and access networks, including optical transport network, synchronous optical networks, asynchronous transfer mode, and fiber to the home; and ethernet, synchronous digital hierarchy framers, cross connects, and T1/E1 and DS-3/E3 mappers/framers. The company’s optical products are used in optical transport platforms, multi-services provisioning platforms, and edge routers where they gather, process, and transmit disparate traffic to their next destination in the network. Its mobile products consist of Winpath processors, T1/E1, and SERDES devices, as well as devices that are used in 2G, 3G, and 4G wireless base stations and mobile backhaul equipment; and UFE family products, combiner/serializers, transceivers/framers, and radio devices. The company sells its products directly, as well as through distributors and independent manufacturers’ representatives to equipment and design manufacturers, who in turn supply their equipment to enterprises, cloud data centers, and carriers. PMC-Sierra, Inc. was founded in 1983 and is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.

pmc - sierra inc (PMCS) Key Developments

PMC-Sierra, Inc. Delivers First 16-Port Sas and Sata Storage Controllers for Data Center Servers

PMC-Sierra Inc. announced the company is first to ship 16-port 12Gb/s SAS and 16-port 6Gb/s SATA I/O controller solutions. PMC's data center I/O products enable OEMs and ODMs to design cost-effective customized server hardware for hyperscale deployments, such as Open Compute, Windows Cloud Servers, OpenStack and Project Scorpio. The devices have the industry's higher port density, lowest power and are capable of more than 1,000,000 I/Os per second to support the most demanding cloud software applications. The product line, which includes eight- and 16-port devices, is optimized for density, power and design flexibility to lower both deployment and development costs and speed time to market. All devices are pin compatible, enabling three solutions based on one hardware design. The hardened operating system drivers can be leveraged as is or customized with available Linux open source code to a specific application. The data center I/O controllers, combined with PMC's SAS expanders, Adaptec by PMC(R) RAID adapters and HBAs, and Flashtec(TM) NVMe solutions, provide an end-to-end solution to address the breadth of data center storage requirements, including Big Data, Hadoop, dense SAS and SATA server storage for compute nodes, large scale disk attachment for warm and cold storage, caching to maximize the performance of slower storage media, and RAID for mission-critical data. The data center I/O product line supports the PCI Express(R) 3.0 specification and includes the following devices: 16-port 12Gb/s SAS I/O controller: PM8076; 8-port 12Gb/s SAS I/O controller: PM8074; 16-port 6Gb/s SATA I/O controller: PM8006. The 16-port controllers enable the higher density solutions with a single chip, double the density of other products. An end-to-end solution using the I/O controllers and PMC's expanders is the lowest power in the industry, up to 40% more power efficient than other solutions. PMC's flexible and configurable single binary Linux host driver and full suite of host drivers enable easy customization so data center architects can tune for specific applications and use cases. The devices, PM8076 16-port 12Gb/s SAS I/O controller, PM8074 8-port 12Gb/s SAS I/O controller and PM8006 16-port 6Gb/s SATA I/O controller will be available in volume production in October 2014.

PMC-Sierra, Inc. Licenses HP Smart Array Intellectual Property to Accelerate Growth in Server Storage Solutions

PMC-Sierra Inc. announced that the company executed an agreement with HP to license core HP Smart Array software, firmware and management technology. PMC will leverage this technology to provide more system value to new and existing server storage and data center customers. In addition, this transaction positions PMC as the supplier of key storage solution components across HP ProLiant Gen9 and beyond. PMC expects the license of Smart Array technology and associated patents, including software and firmware IP related to RAID, HBA, switch, drivers and management tools, to further strengthen the portfolio of complete solutions it can provide to the market. PMC plans to incorporate the Smart Array technology into its new PMC SmartRAID™, SmartHBA™ and other products as part of PMC’s storage product portfolio for OEMs, hyperscale data centers and channel customers.

PMC-Sierra Inc. Enables Density-Optimized Data Center Servers with Industry's First 12Gb/s SAS Expander Card

PMC-Sierra Inc. announced the industry's first 12Gb/s SAS expander card to enable density-optimized servers, the fast growing segment of the worldwide server market according to IDC. The Adaptec(R) 12Gb/s SAS expander card enables flexible, high-density server architectures that can expand as data center storage needs grow. It provides 36 ports in a PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) low-profile form factor, with internal connectivity for up to 24 SAS or SATA drives and eight additional external ports to connect JBODs for even greater capacity expansion on a single RAID controller or Host Bus Adapter. The expander card enables modular passive backplane architectures to reduce server variants and increase data center operating efficiency. The Adaptec 12Gb/s SAS expander card is the industry's only expander to fit in a low-profile MD2 form factor and is within the PCIe(R) power envelope of less than 25 Watts. It mounts internally to any available PCIe slot away from the backplane, and features mini-SAS HD connectors out the top for added cabling flexibility in dense server environments. It can receive power either from the PCIe slot or through a standard 4-pin auxiliary power connector. The card supports SGPIO and SES2 enclosure management, allowing enclosure information to be routed from all daisy-chained expander cards to the HBA or RAID adapter. The 12Gb/s SAS expander card's buffering capabilities improve performance of 6Gb/s SAS+SATA, allowing data centers to leverage their existing drives in addition to the newest 12Gb/s SAS devices to achieve maximum throughput. The expander card is compatible with all HDDs and SSDs, existing active and passive backplanes, as well as all Adaptec Series 8, Series 7 and Series 6 RAID adapters and HBAs. It is also compatible with several 3rd party RAID adapters and HBAs. The Adaptec 82885T 12Gb/s SAS expander card will be available in October 2014 through Adaptec's worldwide distributors and storage channel partners.
