Reed Elsevier plc reported interim management statement for the first quarter of 2014. First quarter underlying revenue growth rates across Reed Elsevier, excluding biennial exhibition cycling, remained broadly consistent with full year 2013, with some small variations by market and geography. The company's financial position remained strong with good cash generation. The outlook for 2014 is unchanged. The company remain confident that, by continuing to execute on strategy, it will deliver another year of underlying revenue, profit, and earnings growth.

Reed Elsevier plc Announces Financial Results for the Year Ended December 2013; Provides Capex Guidance for the Year of 2014

Reed Elsevier plc announced financial results for the year ended December 2013. Adjusted EPS up 9% to 54.0 pence. Revenues were GBP 6 billion, and adjusted operating profit was GBP 1.7 billion. EBITDA in 2013 was GBP 2 billion, up 4% from the prior year. The cash conversion increased from 95% to 97%, reflecting lower CapEx and a GBP 22 million increase in depreciation, the increase in depreciation principally related to higher amortization within the Legal business as a result of the investments that the company has made to date to build the New Lexis platform. Free cash flow before dividends was up 5% over the prior year to GBP 1.1 billion, half of which was paid out in dividends. Net debt at GBP 3.1 billion was broadly unchanged compared to the prior year. Capital investment was 5.1% of revenues. Legal CapEx was 10% of revenues, in line with the prior year but lower than the peak of 12% reported in 2011. Net profit increased by 7% to GBP 1.2 billion, with reported net profit up 6% to GBP 1.1 billion. The company would expect overall CapEx as a percentage of revenues in 2014 to be broadly in line with recent levels.

The Directors of Reed Elsevier PLC have proposed a final dividend per ordinary share of 17.95 pence against 17.0 pence a year ago. The Reed Elsevier PLC final dividend as approved will be paid on May 23, 2014, with ex-dividend and record dates of April 30, 2014 and May 2, 2014 respectively.
