BHP And Anglo Reportedly In Talks To Sell Its Manganese Assets

BHP Billiton Limited (ASX:BHP) and Anglo American plc (LSE:AAL) are reportedly are in talks to sell portfolio of manganese assets in South Africa and Australia, according to people familiar with the matter. The assets include two mines in South Africa, one in Australia, and processing plants in both countries. BHP owns 60% stake and Anglo 40% stake of the operations. “We continue to actively study the next phase of simplification, including structural options, but we will only pursue options that maximize value for BHP Billiton shareholders,” BHP said in a statement. Mark Cutifani, chief executive officer of Anglo said that he wants to explore the selling some of the company’s smaller and less-profitable divisions. Anglo American Platinum Limited (JSE:AMS) said it would sell its Rustenberg and Union platinum mines in South Africa.

Anglo American Platinum Limited reported consolidated earnings results for the six months ended June 30, 2014. For the period, the company reported Gross sales revenue was ZAR 27,855 million against ZAR 24,323 million a year ago. Net sales revenue was ZAR 27,845 million against ZAR 24,142 million a year ago. Operating profit was ZAR 353 million against ZAR 2,674 million a year ago. Profit before taxation was ZAR 307 million against ZAR 2,202 million a year ago. Profit  attributable to owners of the company was ZAR 429 million against ZAR 1,222 million a year ago. Headline earnings were ZAR 157 million against ZAR 1,341 million a year ago. Earnings per diluted share were 164 cents against 467 cents a year ago. Headline earnings per diluted  share were 60 cents against 512  cents a year ago. Net cash from operating activities was 2,598 million against ZAR 339 million a year ago. Purchase of property, plant and equipment (includes interest capitalised) was ZAR 2,846 million against ZAR 2,347 million a year ago. EBITDA was ZAR 2,587 million against ZAR 5,048 million a year ago. Return on average shareholders' equity was 1.2% against 4.5% a year ago. Net sales revenue was 15% higher, due primarily to the impact of the weakening of the rand/US dollar exchange rate and a marginal improvement in the US dollar basket price. Net debt at end of period was ZAR 12,397 million against ZAR 13,205 million a year ago.
