Rakuten Bank Ltd. Sues Royal Bank of Canada over $10 Million Investment

Royal Bank of Canada and several units were sued by Rakuten Bank Ltd. over claims it marketed and sold unsuitable securities backed by deteriorating mortgage loans that wiped out a $10-million U.S. investment. RBC induced Rakuten to invest JPY 1 billion ($10.3 million) in a tranche of notes in a collateralized debt obligation called Logan CDO III Ltd., in June 2007. The lawsuit, which accuses RBC of fraudulent misrepresentation, is seeking to recover the U.S. dollar equivalent of the investment plus interest.

RBC Mulls Acquisitions

Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY) (RBC) is looking for "bite-sized" deals in wealth management, particularly equity managers with potential deal prices in the CAD 500 million-CAD 2 billion range, "maybe" CAD 3 billion, Chief Financial Officer of RBC, Janice Fukakusa said. “What we’re looking at is more on the wealth-management side in terms of asset management,” Fukakusa said. “We’re looking at expanding some of our product capability and distribution capability in markets where we have a lower presence.” RBC would favor deals that expanded its equity capability, “given where the fixed-income cycle is,” she said.

Royal Bank of Canada Agrees to Settle West Virginia Lawsuit

The Royal Bank of Canada has agreed to pay West Virginia $175,000 to remove itself from a massive lawsuit involving allegations of collusion and bid riggings. About a third of that money will go to the private attorneys hired by the state in the case. The bank and the state Attorney General's Office agreed in April to the details of the settlement. A judge approved the settlement in May, according to legal website Law360. The lawsuit is 'multidistrict litigation,' which means West Virginia is one of many other states involved. West Virginia was the only state with claims against RBC. West Virginia and the others involved in the larger lawsuit allege the bank and other big companies - Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo -worked to earn money from sales involving something called municipal derivatives.
