It sells its products to a network of wholesale distributors, who in turn sell to retailers, such as pubs, restaurants, grocery stores, convenience stores, package stores, stadiums, and other retail outlets. The Boston Beer Company, Inc. was founded in 1984 and is based in Boston, Massachusetts.

Boston Beer Co. Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 28, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported net revenue was $231,611,000 against $181,332,000 a year ago. Operating income was $40,493,000 against $32,048,000 a year ago. Income before income tax provision was $40,689,000 against $31,822,000 a year ago. Net income was $25,428,000 or $1.88 per diluted share against $19,715,000 or $1.45 per diluted share a year ago. The net income increase was primarily due to shipment increases, partially offset by increased investments in advertising, promotional and selling expenses. For the six months, the company reported net revenue was $415,456,000 against $317,264,000 a year ago. Operating income was $53,884,000 against $41,734,000 a year ago. Income before income tax provision was $53,940,000 against $41,384,000 a year ago. Net income was $33,743,000 or $2.49 per diluted share against $26,627,000 or $1.96 per diluted share a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $38,320,000 against $17,988,000 a year ago. Purchases of property, plant and equipment was $88,451,000 against $45,563,000 a year ago. The Company's effective tax rate increased to 37% from 36% in the comparable 26-week period in 2013. The lower 2013 rate was primarily a result of the favorable impact of a federal income tax settlement of $0.07 per diluted share in 2013. The company has left unchanged its projected 2014 earnings per diluted share of between $6.00 and $6.40. The company believe that 2014 effective tax rate will be approximately 38%. The company is also continuing to evaluate 2014 capital expenditures and currently estimate investments of between $160 million to $185 million. And now earning over the range from the previously communicated estimate of $160 million to $220 million, which could be significantly higher depending on the capital required to meet future growth. These investments relate to continued investments in the breweries and additional keg purchases in support of growth and increased complexity. These estimates include capital investments for existing Alchemy & Science projects of between $7 million and $9 million. The company expects June 28, 2014, cash balance of $31.3 million together with the future operating cash flows and the $150 million line of credit will be sufficient to fund future cash requirements. It is currently maintaining full year gross margin target of between 51% and 53%.
