sembcorp industries ltd (SCI) Key Developments

Sembcorp Industries Ltd. Announces the Development of its First Beachhead in Jingmen City

Sembcorp Industries announced the expansion of its industrial wastewater treatment business to China's Hubei province, with the development of its first beachhead in Jingmen city. At a total investment of RMB 98.7 million (approximately SGD 20.5 million), the facility will have an initial capacity of 10,000 cubic metres per day with capabilities to treat multiple streams of industrial wastewater. Expected to be completed in the first half of 2016, the facility will provide industrial wastewater treatment services to companies in the JCIP under a 30-year exclusive concession agreement. The 27.6-square kilometre JCIP houses a six million tonnes per annum oil refinery owned by SINOPEC Jingmen, as well as downstream petrochemical, coal-to-chemicals and fine chemicals companies. Refinery output on the site is expected to increase to 10 million tonnes per annum, accelerating the growth of the site as a petrochemical cluster. With this expansion to Hubei province, Sembcorp's utilities business now extends across 11 provincial regions in China.

Sembcorp Industries Ltd. Starts the Building Plant to Turn Waste into Energy

Sembcorp Industries Ltd. has started building its large energy-from-waste (EfW) plant. The $250 million project on Jurong Island, to be completed in early 2016, will be the first to use industrial and commercial waste to produce steam for supply to companies on the island. Located in the Sakra area of the island, the plant marks a significant step in reducing the carbon footprint of Jurong Island's petrochemical hub. It will have two boilers for the industrial and commercial waste, capable of generating 140 tones of steam per hour - and it will achieve this while producing half the amount of greenhouse gases as a coal-fired steam plant. When the plant is ready, the company will be able to supply a third of its customers' steam needs using an environmentally friendly alternative fuel. By using around 1,000 tones of industrial and commercial waste collected by the company's solid waste management operations as fuel, the plant will not only convert waste into energy but also reduce the company's disposal costs for the waste it collects. The start of construction for the EfW plant builds on the company's momentum in growing its green-energy portfolio.
