The Southern Company, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a public electric utility company. The company is involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity through coal, nuclear, oil and gas, and hydro resources in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. It constructs, acquires, owns, and manages generation assets. As of December 31, 2012, the company owned and/or operated 33 hydroelectric generating stations, 32 fossil fuel generating stations, 3 nuclear generating stations, 13 combined cycle/cogeneration stations, 4 solar facilities, 1 landfill gas facility, and 1 biomass facility. The company also provides digital wireless communications services with various communication options, including push to talk, cellular service, text messaging, wireless Internet access, and wireless data; and wholesale fiber optic solutions to telecommunication providers in the Southeast under the Southern Telecom brand name. The company was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Southern Company Announces Preliminary Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 31, 2013

Southern Company announced consolidated Preliminary earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the quarter consolidated basis, the company reported operating revenues of $3,897 million against $3,604 million a year ago. Earnings before income taxes were $128 million against $584 million a year ago. Net income available to common shareholders was $81 million or 9 cents a basic share against $368 million or 42 cents a basic share a year ago. Excluding these items, the company earned $430 million or 49 cents a basic share against $368 million or 42 cents per basic share a year ago. Operating income was $325 million against $766 million a year ago. Net income was $97 million against $384 million a year ago.

Southern Company Increases Quarterly Dividend, Payable on June 6, 2013

Southern Company announced a regular quarterly dividend, including an increase of 1.75 cents per share on a quarterly basis of 50.75 cents per share, payable on June 6, 2013, to shareholders of record as of May 6, 2013. The company is increasing its annual dividend by 7 cents per share to a rate of $2.03 per share.
