MongoDB Partners with Silver Spring Networks Inc. to Scale Real-Time Smart Grid Data Platform

MongoDB announced that Silver Spring Networks Inc. is building on the MongoDB database to seamlessly capture and store high volumes of rapidly changing, complex machine-to-machine data for its new SilverLink Sensor Network. A revolutionary approach to unlocking insights from real-time Smart Grid data, the SilverLink Sensor Network enables developers to utilize previously unavailable or now-enriched data to deliver new applications and services for utilities and energy consumers, at up to 10x the speed and 1/10(th) the cost of traditional utility IT infrastructure. The SilverLink Sensor Network produces near real-time analytics of fast moving data, as well as historical data, across a variety of parameters, such as temporal, geospatial and sensor-type, enabling utilities and application developers to extract deeper and actionable insights into energy usage patterns as they're happening. Silver Spring Networks will also enable the MongoDB developer community to further accelerate development and deployment of new value-add applications that leverage Smart Grid data. Standard and new software-defined sensor components and applications will be made available to utilities, sensor network operators and consumers through the SilverLink App Store.

Silver Spring Networks Signs Teaming Agreement with Smarter Grid Solutions

Silver Spring Networks, Inc. has announced a teaming agreement with Smarter Grid Solutions. Customers will be able to leverage a solution that integrates Smarter Grid Solutions' autonomous grid management technology with Silver Spring's proven IPv6 smart grid networking platform. Together, this enables electrical grid operators to proactively manage renewable energy sources and grid devices. The joint solution builds on Silver Spring and Smarter Grid Solutions' existing engagement at the successful Flexible Plug and Play project, delivered to client UK Power Networks, the distribution network operator for London, and the South East and the East of England. In the Flexible Plug and Play (FPP) project, Silver Spring's networking technology connects an array of distribution equipment across a deployment of intermittent wind and solar resources in Cambridgeshire, UK. This deployment also successfully demonstrated the use of the IEC 61850 protocol across a radio mesh field area network. At the core of the FPP project, Smarter Grid Solutions' Active Network Management technology monitors the electricity grid using data provided by Silver Spring's field area network. The system autonomously calculates the available capacity of the grid and issues real-time control instructions to participating DERs.

Florida Power & Light Selects Silver Spring Networks for North America's Networked Street Light Deployment

Silver Spring Networks, Inc. announced it has been selected by Florida Power & Light Company for North America's larger networked street light deployment under contract. FPL plans to deploy Silver Spring's wireless IPv6 mesh networking technology and management and control software to connect and control 75,000 street lights in the Miami-Dade County region. FPL expects the remote monitoring and control capabilities of the system to significantly improve street light restoration response times and enhance the quality of service to its street light customers. This is an important step in an ongoing effort to modernize and network FPL's power delivery system, including the nearly 500,000 street lights FPL maintains throughout the company's 35-county service area. Silver Spring's networking technology and street light solution should enable FPL to deliver an even better experience for its customers throughout South Florida. In addition to its networked street lights deployment in Florida, Silver Spring's smart street lighting solution has been selected for projects in iconic cities such as Copenhagen and Paris. Copenhagen, the world's most sustainable city, is looking to Silver Spring to deploy a citywide canopy network to connect more than 20,000 street lights. In Paris, Silver Spring has been selected for an advanced street lighting and traffic controls program as the city seeks to reduce its public lighting energy consumption by 30% over the next ten years.
